Anyone have any ideas on a easy way to get the knuckle dust seal onto your front axle?
2000 F250 4x4
I tried installing one myself and ended up trashing it and just took it to the dealer and they put it on for $10 while I waited. The tool that is used to install it is just a cylinder that slips over the axle shaft, but it fits snug around the shaft and puts pressure over the area thats pressed on the shaft, then they just use a mini sledge to beat it on. Without using the tool it's almost impossible to start the seal on the shaft square and then it ends up getting bent. So unless you know a machinist that could turn up a tool for you it's probably cheaper to take it to the dealer and have them do it for you instead of buying a new seal after the first one gets demolished. Good Luck!
You can make the tool yourself for a few bucks and a little time with a bench grinder. Here is a the link on how to make the tool. You'll have to read throught it but it's there.
I used a floor flange, pipe and a cap to put a new knuckle seal on my truck. This is the big light blue one for ESOF hubs. The axle seal was also shot and I replaced it while I had everything apart. Cost about $12 at Home Depot for the pipe parts...
I am now the proud owner of a Ford OEM tool for installing the knuckle seal courtesy of trashing not one but 2 knuckle seals while replacing my balljoints earlier this year. 1st one was really my fault for not being careful - 2cnd one I was almost done and it caved in on me. Local Ford dealer was not very helpful as far as just installing the seals for me so I had to go for it on my own.
I'd be really careful if you decide to go w/ using the homemade tool. Lots of folks have used them with success but a fair # have not had such good fortune.
For shipping costs + a small refundable deposit I'd be willing to loan out the tool. Took me 5min/side to install the seals onto the shaft & then into the knuckle. Lots easier & no worries about damaging something or, driving it on/in too far.
