This is my first time posting but ive been quietly listening to you guys and I want to say many thanks. I bought my 97 f350 srw crew cab 4x4 in January and have had many issues but I found all my answers here without even asking. Most recently I replaced the fuel pump, I was not going to do this myself but found the instructions and guts here to do it. I am gratefull for all of your time and learnig.
Allright my problem is in a month and a half I have gone through 3 surp. belts. the one that was on the truck when I bought it was new but it got p/s fluid on it and started squealing, so I got one from napa and put it on and saved the old one for emergencies. The new one I put on lasted 2-3 weeks walked towards the motor and shreded 1/8" off the belt. I reset the belt and It walked even further shreded 1/8" more off. I put another one on drove around town 2 days all was fine, went to Des Moines this past Fri. did not check until I got home and 1/4" is gone, pieces stuck in hose clamps and laying on motor and hood insulation is cut. Every thing is lined up and I cant figure out why it is doing this. This morning I took it to a shop I trust and the only thing we could see is that the crankshaft pulley has 1 more rib towards the motor than all the other pulleys. Can any of you PLEASE help me out and look at yours and tell me if I have the wrong pulley on mine. At this point if I have to keep buying a belt every 2 weeks i'd rather have my fuel leak back.
That's a new one to me!
What i would do if i were in that situation is go to the auto parts store and Compare their replacement crankshaft pulley with The one you have on there. Take the old one if you have to.
You may have already done this, but start your truck and go look under the hood, see if any of them are out of balance, not turning, ETC.
good luck!
Good timing, had to get some paperwork out of truck. My belt has 7 grooves (valleys) in it and it fits perfectly on crankshaft with no extra "rib" on crank showing.
I need to correct myself. I went back out and took a srewdriver and counted the valleys with it. I looked at it wrong, I have 8 valleys on all pulleys. but the worn belt is sitting against the radiator side on all pulleys except the crank where it is sitting against the motor. The only thing that has been done up there is I had the vacuum pump for the brakes switched. but it all looks to be lined up and nothing seems worn out or locked up. The belt did not walk until highway speeds. Any help?
try the stand-and-stare method as previously stated, but have someone rev the engine. it could also be something with your fan, and the wind at that speed... just my .02
I had a similiar problem on my 95. I tried the dual pulley tensioner, checked all pulleys with a laser aligner, No problems found. Mine would shear off the first rib inside. I think it needed a new damper pulley on the crank but I sold the truck before I bothered with it.
i had a 2000 dodge that did that; i just thought is was a dodge thing!!!!!!found out it was the a/c clutch not turning very good....and finally locked up..dealer charged me around 500 with me buying new one at part store.
