Programmer question

So how does a SCT Xcal2 work? Everyone says that it is "the" programmer for a 6.0, but how does that boil down to using one? If I buy one, how can I get a custom tune? Will someone write me a flash for free or does it cost money? Would you guys buy one used? Please let me know. I know all the warranty issues and dont want to talk that. I want to learn about the sct xcal2. can I get a performance gas mileage tune that will save mpg's and give the edge off the stockness? Will it compensate for 35's in the tranny? etc.

It is a flash programmer. It saves your stock flash file, that way you can always return to stock. You cannot change on the fly, but it only takes about 1 min to upload a new tune. You will not find free custom tunes, you will have to buy them. Matt with Spartan Diesel has a very good rep for custom tunes. Here is his website: http://www.spartandieseltech.com/sct-test.php ...........Other SCT models have "canned" tunes, which are the preloaded tunes. They work ok, but for the best performance, you'll want to go with custom tunes. If you buy one used, make sure the unit is unlocked. When you tune a vehicle, it locks into that exact vehicle. You cannot use it on another vehicle until it is returned to stock to unlock it. It will also compensate for larger tires and makes the tranny shift a lot safer/better. People have found that the economy tunes don't really do much for MPG's. The hot tunes, which are for performace, actually seem to do better for fuel economy. The only drawback is that it's hard to fight the temptation to get heavy on the throttle. The tunes written for economy don't give you performance increases, which makes you get better fuel economy if you don't have the self control with the performance tunes. And believe me, the performace tunes will really unlock your truck's power. You will be suprised how fast these heavy trucks will move with a SCT..........

If the programmer was used on a previous PSD would I be able to use it? It isnt locked, but has been on two trucks, supposedly you can use it on 5 different trucks?

Yup, you can use it on any Ford you want as long as it's unlocked. You have 5 unlocks with a brandnew unit. I think if you use all of them you can get SCT to give you more, but at a price........
