is there any particular year s-10 5 speed one should be looking for to put in one of our trucks ?? i read on another site that i needed the heavy 4 speed bell housing which i have now as i was / am gonna put a t-98 in the 53 , but i may have a freebie 5 speed that needs some minor work given to me but it's from an earlier s-10 . cheap is my middle name !!!! yes i realize i'm still gonna have to buy some of the stuff to aid in the swap if i was to do it .
Is your 53 a flathead? I am putting one in my 52, the ealier S10 transmissions were good as they had the mechanical speedo, the others had a pulse model.
I have a tranny out of a 91 V6, I believe the V6 models have a better 5th gear ratio. I made my adapter out of a 51 heavy duty 4 speed that I cut apart and milled, have a look in my gallery. As long as you get one with the mechanical speedo and the forward mount shifter it should work. I bought some instruction from a guy on e-bay of how to do it you are interested I can scan it and send it to you, it will cost you a coffee at Tim Hortons.
If you intend to use it on the open road for any distance driving I would recommend the T-5. I think you will be much happier with it. I would not recommend abusing it with power shifts and such. With anything resembling normal driving it will last many miles. Good luck
the overdrive is why i'm considering it . the 53 has some pretty steep gears in her and she's a screaming at 55 . naw no more abuse for her , i'm just fine and comfy tooling around irregardless of weather in the coolest beater on the streets . it aint no race car anyway !! but i do have everything for my 4 gear swap so ........ here we go again .....
Another important thing to consider here is the crossmember modification, it took me along time to acually get the cutting wheel out and cut out the original nicely painted crossmember, if you want to keep everything original you will have to keep the old stump pulling 4 speed. Part of my crossmember is now laying on the floor but I will tuck it away in case it needs to be welded back in place.
well if you're refering to a tranny crossmember the 53 -56 's dont have one as such . the bell housing has ears on it where it will bolt into the frame crossmember there . if i have to cut it it's a no go as im not gonna chop the ol' girl up .
