As I was driving back from up north I stop to take a break. Then as i am walking back to my truck i see it spewing neon green fluid from the passenger side engine bay...thought it was coolent but didnt steam, smell or loss of fulid level stayed the same, no high temp gage, no check enging light came on so i drove it home....my guess is could it be something to do with the a/c system? and why it would blow a line in the middle of winter?? i dont know...any thoughts??
i would guess a small pin hole in gasket on the water line (antifreeze). the level can drop a quart and you might not know unless you have the overflow tank marked exactly. If it is a small antifreeze leak, get a bottle of BARS radiator sealer and that should fix it.
Refrigerant oil w/dye, you're correct, comes like that from the factory. Maybe it wore a hole in a line rubbing something .... The compressor does operate in the winter with the heating system you know.
Haven't seen "neon green" AC dye yet, only the red stuff & the UV detection kind. Hard to imagine it "spewing " for long. Most of the AC leaks I've had weren't while running, they were minor, slow & hard to detect, taking days. They also only rarely leaked the oil containing the dye & then not enough to be "spewing" unless we're talking collision damage.
For "spewing" it sounds like there'd need to be some volume. Don't these AC systems only have a few onces of compressor oil?
Should've been able to tell from smell & feel if it was your antifreeze. This often "neon green" fluid also has a habit of leaking slowly, then getting blown around & pooling in odd places, only to dribble on the ground when you stop. Its not always going to be steaming.
Try to confirm your coolant level & confirm your AC is not leaked down & inoperative. AC can operate in any position except OFF, PANEL or FLOOR. Note that air can displace coolant & that sampling your coolant for comparative purposes is easy.
yeah most likely its your coolant, and like everyone else said doesnt have to be staeming, if its slightly thicker than water and very slippery its your coolant, has a distinct smell to it also, check your petcock on your radiator, ive seen them broken or cracked from road debris or old age check your hoses and everything too should be able to see where its coming from
If you have the 4.6 or 5.4 engine, It may be the intake manifold leaking.. I just had this same situation 2 weeks ago. come out from store and saw a small puddle of coolant on passenger side, near the back of the engine. There is a tsb for this 00-18-03. the part number for the updated intake gasket is yl3z-9439-aa. tsb states that vehicles built from 7/1/1998 to 6/30/2000 could be effected.
thanks for all the input so far guys, im going to pull her in the garage tonight and take a better/closer look and see what we come up with and go from there....
i hear these compressors are junk....dealer said mine was leaking...mechanic said otherwise and i've been nickel-and-dimed since! still not up to what the dealer wanted though.
after closer look the bolts that hold the compressor together just rotted away!! which intern led to the whole thing to blow, so it was a/c fluid all along....now i called around and found out the compressor and a new line is big bucks!! damit.....i guess i now have a weekend project guys!!
