Currently i am rebuilding a flathead 6, and my buddy recently bought a flathead V8. The crankcase on my engine is painted a neon orange, and the heads on his V8 are the same color. Were all flatheads origionally painted this color? Only a certain area is orange though, the rest is red. Thanx.
Depends on the year/series somewhat. The V8's have more research info available. I'm not aware of color lists for 6's, but the following site might help.

I don't think Henry would have used neon orange even if it was available
well, i ended up just painting the block and head red and all the other components (manifolds, generator, etc.) black. That chart mtflat directed me to said the engine was supposed to be blue! I think it is supposed to be orange though.
The site link I posted was for V8's. The only reference I have to colors for 6's is the book by Statham "Ford Pickup Trucks". He makes the following comment under the 53 models.
"The 215ci 'Cost Clipper' six introduced in 1952 carried over into 1953 with no changes. The six boasted a high (for the time) compression ratio of 7.0:1, and produced 185lb-ft of torque......the six normally came from the factory painted gray."
This was the OHV, so previous to 52 I'd go along with orange. It was just the neon part that struck me funny.
Conventional wisdom seems to be that unless you're going for a 100 point show truck, paint the engine the color you want to look at whenever you pop the hood. I went with Ford medium blue on my V8 - which wasn't a factory choice either.
