i've got a 75 f250 4x4 with a 390. there is a high rpm rattle and it sounds like there is a loose baffle of loose bolt in the oil pan. i am wonderiing if you can drop the pan with the motor still in the truck? any thought would be appreciated!!!
You should be able to but may have to disconnect the motor mounts and lift the engine up.
I must say I've never heard of a rattle in a oil pan though, are you sure about this?
the rattle only comes out when the truck is at a certain rpm and since there is no tach i really don't know what it is. but is sounds to me to be coming fromm the bottom.
Yes you can drop the pan in the truck. Ounce you get it loose it will drop a few inches then you have to remove the oil pump pickup tube witch is just two bolts on the pump and one on a main bearing cap stud. Then the pan will drop right out.

Ok but I still don't think it's something in the pan, the oil would dampen any rattle. Is this an auto tranny? You may have a cracked flex plate.
