tune up

im planning to drive my explorer to california from washington this wont be the first time. i noticed my engine shakes on cold start up i have put a can of seafoam and put a full tank of gas and still does it once its warmed up its fine. i have never changed the spark plugs and wires yet. but anyway i was thinking of buying autolite platinums and a duralast wireset from autozone since i work there and a air and fuel filter. anything else ishould change besides the oil and transmission filter?

Do yourself a favour and use only the Motorcraft plugs and wires.

Assuming it's a 94 4.0, best way to get to the plugs is through the wheel wells. Consiser cleaning/replacing the IAC. Also, replace the fuel filter. I also agree with the Motorcraft recommendation.

I double-agree with motorcraft plugs AND wires. And agree on the IAC cleaning. Clean the air filter (if it is cleanable, like a k&n) if not, get a new one. Since you're gonna be in the engine compartment, i'd get a can of electronic cleaner and spray down the MAF connectors along with the IAC connectors. And a throttle body rinse would do good too.

You dont really have to mess with anything on the transmission unless its due for a fluid change.

Triple-check to make sure coolant, brake fluid, and power steering fluids are all topped off.

its a 94 explorer my transmission fluid only has 13k on it. i cant really afford getting the motorcraft parts. thats why i wanted autolite platinums cause it was a ford product and i was thinking of goin to kragens and get the spark plug wires cause they are autolites.

Autolite is fine, same stuff as Motorcraft.

Other than that I'll just echo what everyone else said. Check all your fluids, top off as necessary. Clean the IAC, throttle body, replace the air filter, replace the fuel filter, etc. Don't drive it that far until you've gotten the shake to go away. Pull the codes, see if that leads anywhere with the shake.

The best advice I ever got for long road trips was "if your car is acting fine - no real troubles with it during your daily grind, its not going to give you any trouble on a long drive". I got this from a 30 year mechanic who knows his stuff, and hes pretty much been right on my long drives. I of course do the small stuff like oil change and air filter check at least. These I do for 100+ mile trips.
