IS there a trick to keep oil from running every where when you take the filter off? Yes I drained the oil first but still had a lot of oil draining out of the filter as I was unscrewing it.
I installed a Fumoto Oil Drain Valve I have these on all my other vehicles and it is so nice to hook up a short piece of hose and drain the oil right into gallon jugs with no mess...except the oil filter.
I usually unscrew the filter until the oil starts draining and then let it drain into the pan until the oil in the lines and cooler drains completely. Then I remove the filter.

Yea it will if it's hot.
Get a bigger pan.
Yea I know smart a$$. Couldn't pass it up.

Aluminum foil.
Tear off a 24" section or so, and fashion a "tunnel" under the filter and have it "funnel" the oil over the framerail/axles and into your pan. When you're done changing filters, ease it out and toss it. No, or very litle cleanup needed.

Cool thanks for the AL foil tip sounds good. Going with that idea guess i could just set a gallon jug under it with a funnel then loosen it up and let it sit.
Guess I shouldn't complain about it to much they could have put the oil filter somewhere else that would require a contortion act to get to it at least it is right at the bottom easy to get to.
I just make a mess. Put down some plastic under me to keep from getting oil all over the garage, wife already hates the fact that I got oil on the garage floor already, but hell it's a garage.
This isn't a problem for me. I just get a cowboy friend of mine to hold a funnel beneath the filter whileI spin it loose. Generally works real well as long as the horse he's sitting on doesn't get ornery......
i just spin and run, keep a vinyl 5' x 7' banner down for splatters that go beyond the oil catch pan.
Not trying to hijack here, but do you folks have to add 6.5 quarts? I have read up on this, and there is some idea out there that some of these V10s have short oil dipsticks. All I know is that 6 quarts gets me to the bottom of the hatchmarks, another half quart gets me where I want to be.
Yea there's a trick, get a gallon Clorx bottle and cut the top part off, lossen the oil filter and let it drop into the small bucket you have made hold it steady for about 2 minutes and all the oil and filter is in the bucket.
Now use the top part as a funnel to pour your oil in the motor.
I haven't tried tried it yet, but a buddy told me he puts a big gallon size zip lock bag around the filter and closes it up as good as you can.
The using both hands he unscrews the filter with no mess. I might try this on some of my other vehicles but the V10 is about the easiest I have ever had to change the oil on. My pan is big enough to catch the pan drain and what falls from the filter. All the while I am on my comfortable creeper.
One hand gets a little dirty, but not bad. Just don't drop the filter into your pan. That makes a big splash.
