Pyro questions

Got money set aside to spend on the truck, and I think I've decided on a full set of gauges first (still kind of hung between this and exhaust though). My first question is- my truck already has a clamp-on pyro in place, should I leave it there or replace it with a thread-in pyro? If thread-in is preferred, I'll also have to buy the drill bit and tap to install unfortunately
Question #2- should I spring for the weatherpack connectors for the pyro or are the ring terminal connections just fine?
FWIW, I'll be ordering from Diesel Manor- full Isspro set with A-pillar.

i have worked with both styles, weatherpack and ring terminal. same goes with the spring clamp and threaded. its all about preference, whichever makes you happier, all of the styles worked flawlessly for me in the past. you will get the same reading whichever way you go,
you said you already have a pyro installed? are you going to be selling it? what brand is it?

Where is the clamp in now? pre or post turbo? If it is pre turbo then I would get a new clamp in iconel use the existing hole(we dont know if the old one is any good). If you do decide to go with the tap method the bit and tap pkg is only like $10 IIRC. you can also pick one up at your local hardware store. the main thing to remember is you want to take your pyro readings PRE-turbo.

the bit and tap are not a big expense...i got mine from a local hardware store that marks up Lowe's products ( ) for $14 for both

as far as the exsisting probe, i agree with everything brandon said

The current pyro probe is just below the exhaust manifold (up pipe?), pre-turbo. Based on your post the clamp-in requires a hole- everything I've read says the pyro should be in the manifold, but could I just tap the existing hole for the new pyro? I guess I'll keep from buying the drill and tap from Diesel Manor and just pray I can find one locally at a decent price (which may be hard down here).

c00n- all I have is a pyro probe and lead wire, no gauge. Not sure on brand, but if/when I pull it out I can let you know.

FYI, a 21/64" bit (or type "R" if you can actually find that in stores) and a 1/8" NPT is what you will need for the bit/tap.

EDIT: Heck, if you dont want to pay for them, PM me your address and ill let you borrow mine. Its not like i will be using them anytime soon.

I ran my probe in the same spot for 5 1/2 yrs with no issues at all. I only moved it to the manifold when I replaced my up pipes. If I didn't have to do the up pipes, It would still be there. As long as it's close to the manifold it's fine right there.

Chase, like I said before if the hole is in the up pipe, then just get another clamp in probe and be done, the clamp ins are just as good as the tap ins. don't make it harder on your self.

I totally agree, however the gauges I'm looking at only offer thread-in pyros (Diesel Manor) and since the full kit is the cheapest I've found ($328) I basically discounted some of the other deals I've seen. However, if there is some place that offers a clamp-in probe AND a color matched A-pillar (save me $20 for a can of paint) then that's worth considering. I do like how the Isspro gauges basically match the stock gauges though, which is another reason I'm favoring the DM kit. Plus, they seem to offer great support if you hit a snag.
With a hole already there I don't imagine tapping it out can be too big of a headache... can it?

I might consider that if I can't find the right tap at a decent price locally.

On the Diesel Manor web site under the 3 gauge set for power stroke under the pyro gauge #R3607TR-CT Pyrometer Kit is a clamp on type.

Nice catch, I hadn't clicked on the link for the pyro and noticed that they offer a band clamp t/c option- I guess that's the way to go for my setup. Thanks TN97STROKE!

it looks like you have it all figured out with the clamp on type, but if you still need it the offer is open, shoot me a pm if/when you need it.
