did a motor swap, on test drive thumping and bumping, kind of jerking in 2nd and 3rd gear, came home, 2 hrs later took it out for another test drive and speedometer quit and now its thumping and bumping in 4th and 5th but not 2nd and 3rd. What is goin on with my truck?????? It is a 5 speed 1996 could it be clutch? trans? motor? i am stumped. maybe a sensor?
not sure on this but did you also get the computer that the swapped engine had? By your description cant tell if its just a rough running engine or if you did something to the trans driveline. I would guess you mean the engine is running rough so it just could be you need to get the codes pulled on a good computer based machine to ensure compatability between the 2 engines. remember not all are exactly alike.
nope didnt get computer, engine seems to be running good, just after you get going it jerks hard in 4th and 5th, but first test drive was jerking in 2nd and 3rd, first test drive speedometer worked and second drive it quit. ABS light was on before motor swap, is still on and engine light is on. dont have diagnostic equip. any info is much appreciated. THX!!!
go to one of the dealers such as autozone and see if they will pull codes for ya. if not find a shop that has diagnostic equipment and have them do a check should run less than $50 I would think.
Almost sounds like a typical speed sensor issue. If not for the engine swap that would be my first inclination. On the '97 I believe the VSS is located on the tranmission itself.
I also agree that it could be something in the PCM logic.
