iv been reading about the 4.9 stright 6 to 400 motor swap and thats what i want to do. I have a 94 ford f-150 i bought the 80s series frame mounts and i have the 77 engine mount. THe stright 6 mounts are on top of the crossmember and it looks as though the mounts I have bolt behind that do i need to drill my own holes because the holes in the frame where the other one was wont line up this might sound pretty dumb but i just want to make sure im doing it right i also have the bigger raditor i bought im thinkin im all set but is there something im missin please let me know for those who have done this thanks a bunch and hopefully soon ill be back on the road
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 17-Apr-02 AT 01:36 PM (EST)]This is a bit unusual. I did the 4.9 to the 400 swap but my truck is an 86' and that does make a difference. Is your truck an auto or manual? Because if you have a auto then you have to find some way of deal with the fact the trans is computer controlled and the 400 has no provisions for a computer plus if you ahve a manual the there is a good chance your tranny and bellhousing is all one piece and the 400 requires a big block setup ie. 460 for newer trannys. There is a lot more expence involved with your 94' than my 86' if you are willing to do a lot of custom electrical and parts chasing then it sounds like a challenging project. My advice is that you would be better off with a 351W and you can use those chassis mounts that you already have to mount in the 351. I don't want to sound negative but the amount of gain for the effort is not worth it when you can easilly make big HP with a 351w and a lot less effort and expense I thing it is a better engine choice for your situation. That is unless you already knew and researched all of this and are well aware then the holes should line up if not you can always just weld the mounts on if you can get them properly aligned and you will need engine mounts from 80-82 to work properly.
I am in the process of swaping a 351m in place of a 302 in my 89 f150. The m dropped in place of the 302 useing the 79 rubber motor mounts and stock 302 frame mounts. I had to move the crossmember up 2'' for the c6 because its shorter. The 79 ps brackets and pullies are the same and the alternator brackets and pullie will work the the alternator. All I have left is to mount the ac compressor.
yes i rleaze now that i should have done a motor that comes already equipt in my year.. but its too late now a lot of motor work and money l8er i relize whops lol but thats kidna late now i do have the 80s purches and the 77 motor mounts. the tranny that was in the 94 was a man but that is yanked in favor of a c6 i guess time will tell till i can get it in i think i have all the nessary parts but some custom fab is prolly in order.. i think those mounts mount behind the crossmemeber on the frame thats where it looks anyway thats for the advice looks like i got a lot of make it work ahead of me
