Talking Exhaust hunting for my f100

aye guys, i have a 78 ford f100 with a 300 i6, now you all know the 300 has bad exhaust sound but my stock muffler gives a great deep throaty tone but has a hole in the top and it almost rusted through. last weekend i attended the street rod nationals in springfield mo and i heard every car there. every car that was there had a VERY deep exhaust sound and a very raw powered sound and most of the guys i talked to said flowmaster but most of the guys had split headers with half being stright piped and half glasspacked or muffled. i want it to be fairly quiet but still deep throaty and powerful sounding, i would also like to keep it on a budget of under $200. Does anyone know a muffler that will give me that sound?

I have a flow master 50 series stock manifold. 2" pipe going too the muffler and a 2.5"tail pipe existing behind the rear axle. Nice deep sound not that loud. I think it's sounds good

The guys you talked to did they also run a L6/six or were they all v8?
You will never get the same sound from a L6/six that you can from an v8.

If they were L6 what motor (GM?) and what systems did they run from motor to tail pipe and where did it exit? This all makes a difference on how it will sound.
If a header was it 3 & 3 to 2 and did they run a Y pipe or a duel in 1 out muffler or duel mufflers?

Now what are you starting with from motor back?
BTW I don't know what mine will sound like (81 F100 w/300) as I don't have it running yet but I have EFI manifolds with stock Y pipe, no cat into stock muffler & tail pipe out behind the rear tire.
All of it is fairly new so will be a bit before I have to replace any of it.

I have always liked turbo mufflers... "deep throaty sound" when the throttle is open but not too much on cruise. Also less restriction vs OE. Your local AP store probably has one for $35 or something like that that may fit. Summit has several also.

Just check dimensions and may need a short length of straight tube and extra clamps to get it fitted up.

I would stick with a single exhaust, both for simplicity and for cost - but also for sound. I've watched my share of 300/4.9 videos on youtube, and from what I can tell, I like the single exhaust sound better. I'll bet a Flowmaster would sound alright behind a 300, but you really want to run the exhaust all the way out the back of the truck if you're looking for a deep tone which is also smooth and mellow. I think the longer run of pipe serves to smooth out the tone. The trucks with duals seemed to sound choppy and raspy, almost like a V6.
Old UPS trucks/package cars used the 300, and those sounded awesome. I'd imagine they were running a big old truck muffler, but they almost certainly had a longer exhaust than a Dentside.

Well toss out how they sounded and what yours will sound like as there is NO way yours will sound like it.

I did have a L6 (Toyota L/C) with a duel outlet header to a Y pipe to small turbo muffler and tail pipe rear of the rear tire that sounded pretty good but no way near a v8.
I also ran a glass pack cherry bomb on a Dodge van with a 225 slant six with stock manifold and head pipe. No change from the stock sound that I could tell.

When the time comes to replace the muffler on my truck I will look into a small turbo muffler.

It may do that on a v8 but I don't think it will on a L6 motor.

I did have a 68 Ford 298 with factory duel and it came 2 ways, mufflers & tail pipes or mufflers & resonators. I run just mufflers & pipes and I thought it sounded great and had people say so too.

You did not say what you would be running in front of the muffler stock log manifold, EFI manifolds, header/type?
I would not run muffler & resonator, one or the other and think the muffler over the resonator.

I have a Flowmaster 50 series on my truck with the F-600 HD manifold and ran 2 1/2" pipe in the stock location. It is not too loud around town but over 65 mph I wish it was quieter.
