I know some swear by oil analysis and some swear at it and some are indifferent but here is my story.
I bought my truck with 46k. I have driven it 49k. The previous owner changed oil every 3k so I did the same. Yes, I know that is way to often but I am an old dog and an habitual 3k oil changer. I have always used Rotella 15-40 dino and a Motorcraft filter. After pulling this sample I have switched to Rotella 5-40 syn.
Price wise going with the syn and changing to a 6k interval with a filter change at 3k it is actually a few bucks cheaper. This UOA says I could easily go 5k with the dino so I feel quite comfortable going 6k with the syn. I will send another sample at 6k to see how the 6k syn compares to the 3k dino. Another plus for the syn is the near gasser type cold starts, I sure like that.
Glad to see your report looks good, although it's all greek to me. I just change mine every 5 or 6 weeks and don't bother with the OA. (Every 5000 miles)

That's what I have pretty much done with all my vehicles, except every 3k. Curiosity got the best of me. The truck is not my daily driver and I have gone as long as 14 months between oil changes and as short as 5 days on a cross country trip.
Just curious. How long did it take you to get the results back? And do you not think the 15 qts of oil compared to 5 qts on most vehicles could get you up to 5,000 miles? Of course 14 months is a long time between changes compared to what I'm used to.

Seven days from send to receive. Good point about oil volume. But even my 4 and a 1/4 quart daily driver gets changed every 3k. The manual says every 7.5k. The manufacturers don't want your vehicle to last to long. They need the turnover to survive. I have oil change OCD. What the hell, I just like taken care of my vehicles and get a little obsessive. I'm retired and now that I have more time on my hands the car and truck get even more attention.
I remember when 3000 mile oil changes on a gasser meant draining black oil. I've seen 3k oil on newer vehicles that still looked new. That's why I don't have a problem with the extended intervals. Of course, with the miles I drive, I don't exactly let the oil get old.
Can anyone tell me exactly what is involved in doing an oil analysis? I'm looking at buying a used truck and a lot of people said you should do an oil analysis before you buy. Where are you supposed to pull the oil from? How much do you need? Where can I get an oil analysis done?
I am going to be squeezing 8,000 out of my delo dino 15w40 as per blackstones instructions. Robin, I honestly think you could have stuck with the dino and squeezed over 5,000 miles out of the oil like I am, instead of paying extra for the syn. just trying to save you some money.

Considering the average miles per year I put on the truck in the past 3 years I wont even spend $100.00 a year on syn. Plus I really like the gasser like cold starts of the synthetic. If it were my daily driver and I was racking up seriuos mileage the price would make a difference.

What's kind of humorous about that Chris is that we got a "Free Tires for Life" deal on my wifes Mitsubishi Raider DuroCross (Dodge Dakota), and they insist on 3000 mile intervals at $40 a pop. Interesting, isn't it?
I'm THIS CLOSE to saying screw that crap and going to my own OCs and saving the money, but then again, my wife drives so few miles on her truck they already last twice as long as they should. The dealer is constantly bugging us at 1500 miles to bring it in for service. I keep telling them she only drives 3 blocks to work, but the letters keep coming. The two things that keep me letting them do it is that A) It's only every 6 months, and $40 ain't THAT bad from a dealer and B) If/when she needs new tires, we get a free set. I consider it just paying ahead for tires. That and I'm not comfortable letting the oil go much longer than that on the short little trips she does. To put it in perspective, we bought the truck in Oct '06 with 7500 on it, and it now has 11k & change.
