Anyone out there ever install a "carputer"? I'm considering installing one in my 2000 Expedition. Right now I'm stuck on figuring out where to mount the touch screen monitor. I don't want to use one of the in-dash motorized jobs, because I already have a nice Pioneer head unit that is also the DVD player connected to my rear roof mounted TV. Ideally, I would like some type of articulated mount that would somehow attach to the side of the center console on the driver's side and allow me to swing the monitor up and over when I wanted to use it. Any suggestions?
Thanks.. but I'd like to stay away from something that large... here is an example of what I'm talking about needing to mount: http://www.lilliputweb.net/ts702.html
Need...? I wouldn't exactly say it's a need exactly.
I'm going to install a full fledged PC in the vehicle. It will provide GPS, yes, but it will also be a PC, and the touch screen monitor will allow me to Access GPS, MP3's stored on the drive, also play DVD Movies that I've copied to ISO images and stored on it, internet access, etc. Check it out here... this is one website that shows you what they are, but these are too expensive.. I found another dealer but that URL is on my laptop which i don't have access to right now.
Of course you're right.... trying to mess with it too much while driving would certainly be an invitation for disaster... but don't worry about me... I'm a responsible adult.. I try to keep my eyes and brain on the road.. especially driving around in a nearly 3 ton SUV! The only thing I would see myself messing with while actually driving would be to use the GPS and the MP3 player..... the rest is for when stopped or the passenger to do!
Here's what I put in mine. It's the Pioneer AVIC-D3 this, or the better Pioneer AVIC-Z2 I think could do everything you want except for the ability to have the computer. (I myself can't imagine why you'd need for a computer in a car anyway but that's me) I'd think going with a Pioneer system would probably be cheaper, and much cleaner looking. I'd think the little you'd use the computer, it'd be better to just throw the laptop in the car when you needed it. Also, I'd be concerned that all that stuff you'd have mounted would make you a big target of those who break into vehicles. The openings on the expedition aren't normally a double DIN as required by the Pioneer units but it's very easy to modify the dash to accept a double DIN unit, and have a very clean install.
