I want to put a straight axel under the front. Something a little heavier than stock. I want to do away with the twin eye beams. How easy would this be? And is there any suggestions on what type of axel to use and how expensive it would be?
Search is your friend- search for straight axle swap or solid axle swap. Assuming you've got a 4x4 F250, you'll need the following from an F350:
D60 front axle hub to hub, all brake components included
springs
track bar
steering linkages
rear spring hangers
front driveshaft
front yoke off T-case
All this will set you back somewhere around $2000 depending on how good a deal you can find. Figure into your equation cost for any parts that may need replaced- wheel bearings, ball joints, etc.
For axle ratios, you will want the front to match the rear. For the trans I'm not sure what you mean? You won't be changing the trans at all, unless you are trying to go from 4x2 to 4x4 (even then you won't need to worry about trans gear ratios). If you are trying to go 4x2 to 4x4 you are better off selling yours and buying a 4x4. Not that you can't swap from 4x2 to 4x4 it's just a lot of work. If you are 4x4 already the D60 is a bolt-in swap basically (you need to remove a little bit of metal from the crossmember, but other than that it's bolt-in).
OK I got the 3.55 rears and was lookin at a junkyard for the f-350 front. They said they came in 3.54 and 4.10. Unless that was a mistake on their part
you can use a front 4x4 axle off a dually but you need to take the hubs off and use your old ones. If you do do the swap might as well do the add a leaf why your already in there! I just did this on a friends truck a month ago and he loves it! they are 3.55s in the front. its really easy to do get the longer u bolts before you do any thing!!!!!!!! Its a real pain on a sat. to try and track them down if you break or cut them we cut them its faster!! Really should reuse u bolts at least in the front anyway.
I assume you have checked your door tag for the axle code and came up with the 3.55 ratio. That is a Ford rear.
The 3.54 numbers you are getting is the Dana axle. I have heard that the extremly minor difference in ratio should not be a concern.
it took a friend and myself about a day to swap out my dana 50 for the 60. we took our time and did a little sanding and painting of the 60 before installing it. it bolts right up. you can use a dana 60 from an f-350 between the years of 1984 (i think) and 1997. there are a few differences in those years (brakes, kingpin vs ball joint, etc) but any within those years will be fine.
