I've think I've got enough $ left over from our tax return right now to do either a 6 pos. DP tuner or a full gauge set. The sensible side of me says to get the gauges first so I can keep an eye on things, but the power freak in me says DO THE CHIP MAN! For the record, it will be both eventually but only one or the other for right now.
I voted gauges because that is the right way to go. BUT if you really think you could keep your foot out of it, you could get the chip first. I know I couldn't do it, but maybe you can.

You need exhaust and intake also before DP.
Keep my foot out of it? Yeah, ummm...
probably not I'm pretty sure I'll get the gauges, I want to be able to keep an eye on the important stuff before I start going nuts adding power. As far as intake and exhaust, I've got the stuff for a DIY 6637 on its way but I still need to explore exhaust options. Is the stock exhaust 3" pre-muffler and 4" out?
The stock is 3 1/2" all the way from turbo. You could save some money and do a muffler delete pipe. I ran one for years with my Superchip I had before I bought the DP. Once PMS strikes there is no turning back.
Without gauges, I'd be afraid to run stock, but you knew that. Gauges have shown me to stay out of the pedal when I had egt and boost issues. Without them,I know I would have had a trashed engine and turbo! Good luck

I need to stick my head underneath, but since mine is a CA truck I'm pretty sure I've got a kitty in there. Trouble is, I have no need for a kitty in my truck, I need a kitty out in the barn catching mice so I think I'll set the kitty free. Doing a muffler delete would probably make the truck too loud to keep from waking my two young girls up while it's warming up in the morning, as well as running down the road at 70-80 mph. How much flow would be gained by going to a 4" over the 3.5"? Or should I just look into a good aftermarket muffler to up the flow?
This PMS is going to get out of hand I know, but I won't be able to go too crazy- I still need to have $ for mods on my dirt bike and snowmobile!
The muffler delete in not as loud as you think. Most people will not notice with normal driving. A good 4" turbo back will help with EGTs and sound good also. I bought mine from Diesel manor MBRP and I installed the muffler that comes with it.
If you have a good 4" exhaust, it's hard to get those EGTs up there unless you're really into it or loaded heavy. Especially in winter. I said gauges first because things can go wrong and when you're already pushing it with the tuner, you don't want to melt a piston because of something stupid.
EDIT: I ran mine for a week without gauges, but I put them in as soon as I could. I already had a 4" exhaust and 6637, so I know I had good flow. Short spikes to 1500 or higher won't hurt anything, but long durations at 1300 can.

No offense, but is that a serious question!?! It isn't worth it...unless you really want a good reason to pull the motor.

I'm going to show this post to my wife as justification for me spending nearly $400 on a set of gauges that, in her mind, aren't necessary. I'm aware that a lot of bad things can happen if you aren't keeping an eye on EGT's especially. Just need more ammo to keep my wife from griping!

Next you can tell her you are crazy for not doing the JOHN WOOD VB before your chip. It is only foolish to waste $50 on a reburn and another $15 on shipping. If you do the vb before the chip you can save almost $75!!! That could be used to...buy an OBA...do the intanks (w/o fancy filter)...buy DK...
BTW - Dennis at ITP diesel tells me it is not bad to drive the JWVB w/o the chip installed. SOOOO you can install the VB and then wait till money comes again for the chip.
EDIT - Patience is a virtue! If you can handle it, wait till you find a deal. That is what I did. A guy on here sold them to me w a color matched pod for $100+$20 shipping+$1.05 for Postal Money Order=$121.05 Maybe I am a freak, but the shopping and research is just about as much fun as the product. Now all I need to know is which infant car seat to buy!!! I am not having fun with that one.
Bought my 7.3 on Friday will be towing regular and everything is stock(motor) right now. was looking at gauges and at 3-400 bucks figure for a few hundred more I could get an edge tuner that has "gauge" readouts and is a tuner for about $900.
wouldnt it make more sense to just pony up for the tuner with gauge option?
that is what I am looking at. am I wrong. not sure I want to spend the extra dough but I def want some detailed info while towing. just not sure of how far to go with it.
also is an intake and exhaust needed to run the tuner?
or is it that most people do that first then get the tuners?
Sorry for the ignoramous in me, but I just started smoking last Friday
