What Scott said----> The 305 or 265 or what ever is the width of the tread in millimeters. The height of the tire comes from the 75R or 65R or what ever you buy. The sidewall height will be what ever that number is in percentage of the tire width. In other words, 305 75R 16 is 75% of the 305 width will be the sidewall height. I have 305's with no lift on my 4x4 cc and have no rubbing issues at all. If you have a leveling kit, I would think that you too can run them with no issues at all.
Carefull though, when you go with a 33x 10.50 you need to really start watching the rim width... please dont me ask to get more specific, just trust me, a 7" or even an 8" rim is not a good match. Where as the 285's, 305's and 315's do a much better job of matching up to our rims.. If you need specifics, I will go get them.. But I hoping you trust me....
I cannot speak for how well the 285s will be on an 8" wheel. I have 10s and they ran fine and my current tires are good on the 10s also. You might call a tire shop and ask if it is ok to run 285s on an 8" wheel.
I was running 285/75R16's Uniroyal Liberator's for ~40,000miles on the stock rims and never had any trouble.
YOUR MILEAGE WILL GO DOWN
Now, I just picked up 1 full MPG just by switching tires. Hmmmm.... and they are still ~33" tall..... got anyone interested yet?
I bought a set of used Big O brand Big Foot XT tires in 255/85R16. They don't look any different in width but are taller than stock. The extra height and slightly narrower footprint combine to actually increase my mileage.
Choices in the 255/85R16 size are much more limited, but it's the only size I plan on running.
i'm sure this goes without saying, but rim width plays a huge part in how wide a tire "appears" when mounted. the tread width (contact patch with road) doesn't really change, but the measured distance from sidewall to sidewall will be greater on a wider rim. looking at a cross section, the 10" rim will make the tire ballon out more, and a 8 inch rim will squeeze it in moreso. i have 305/70R16 on a 8" rim with no lift and have no rubbing whatsoever. but if would have if i went to a 10" rim with no liff, keeping the backspacing the same, the outer edge of the rim would be stuck out futher, and would cause rubbing on the edge of the fender and plastic fender liner. my rims are OK. i like the look, but the fake beadlocker makes them a bitch to clean. and i wouldn't recommend a wheel with the polished or superfinish. my next wheels will be chrome, hopefully i will be able to put a 4" lift front and rear, and new wheels/tires at the same time.
