doctors -- your experiences?

What are your thoughts on doctors? Do you mind going to a doctor when the need arises or do you hate the thought of going to one? Have you had good or bad experiences with doctors?

Reason I bring this up is because I'm having a bad streak with my health (got over strep throat last week and now have a bigger problem). The hospital/clinic that I normally go too used to be good, but the doctors have become quite rude and moody in the last year. Experiences with specialists have been not-so-fun.

Tomorrow I'm calling in sick to work and trying to get into another specialist doc that my grandpa says is really good. Hopefully he'll be able to help me. I can't do anything with all this pain anymore and it keeps getting worse. I had this same problem last year and ended up in the ER because of the pain. I'm so tired of hurting.

I go to church with my doctor and I know her and her husband very well. usually if I'm hurtin and it is a persisitent pain I'll tell her about it on Sunday mornings. Other than that she knows if it is the rare occasion that I do call her office it is because I have passed the high threshold I have for pain and I am really hurtin or something is seriously bothering me, in other words I don't call when I get a scratch or a bruise.

I really like having her as a docotr, and she's not afraid at all to tell you the truth and not BS around with something.

You might as well go see the doctor. Just like any other professional, they take the training to do what they do.

My experiences, on the other hand...

I haven't seen my family doc in about 2 years. I've been meaning to set an appointment to get a check up of overall general health, what with me turning 30 last month. But the problem I have with him is he's 45 minutes away, and he just doesn't "care" like the GP I had before him. My first doctor retired, and this new one took over the practice. That's been about 12 years now. I guess I just have to get off my **** and find a new one.

My family has even worse experiences than mine. Call it 3 cases of cancer going undiagnosed until it's too late. Lack of testing, inadequate testing, miscommunication, or "Let's just wait and see" is what did them in. 3 different family members, 3 different cities, 3 different doctors. ???

My wife's uncle just recently got diagnosed, but he's a bit of a wing nut when it comes to health anyway. He knew 2 years ago, and thought he could heal himself "wholistically". In that time, he's gotten worse, and his doctor is just shaking his head. He's doing it to himself. He's too late for chemo now.

Anyway, in these 4 cases I'm presenting, none of them got a second opinion. Probably could have saved them a world of hurt. (Us too.)

You should always pick a doctor that you know is going to work with you.

I dont like my doctors/nurse practitioners very much. I've had to deal with rude unprofessional behavior from the doctor all the way down to the techs. They make you wait 2hrs past the appointment time and more than once I've seen people sign in after me and get in to see the doctor before me. They treat people differently depending on what kind of insurance you have. I give tennessee a poor grade when it comes to medical care. I've seen this kind of treament form nashville to east tennessee.

I don't have a problem with doctors per se, although it's been quite a while since I met one that impressed me...on the other hand it's been quite a while since I've been to one. I'm one of those lucky people who makes too much money to qualify for any public health programs, but not enough to be able to afford medical insurance or to be able pay cash. And I have NO benefits from my job either. If anything happens to me, it's cheaper just to pull the plug than to try to fix it! Oh well, ain't nobody gonna miss me when I'm gone anyway!

A woman I know in the bay area had a serious heart attack last year, and now she's faced with medical bills of over 100,000 grand. She's having to sell her house and move into a cheap apartment (of which no such thing exists in the SF Bay Area).

I sometimes feel like I ought to join one of those religions that don't believe in going to the doctor, that anything that happens to you is just God's will and if He wants you to live, He will heal you! (Yeah, right. I already know the end result of THAT one!)

It's important to find one who speaks english well. If you can't understand a word they say, it's hopeless.

Having worked with physicians for the past 25 years, let me make this observation: Most people take far better care of their trucks than their own body. On these forums, our sense of decorum is offended when people tell of driving around with grinding brake noises or persistent engine problems. Is it any wonder MDs are similarly offended when patients show up complaining of neglected, long standing problems?

Your exactly right aeroclorado. People eat hot dogs all the wrong foods down a ton of beer and then smoke some cigarettes an wonder whats wrong. We would never treat our truck that way. BTW Im not talik about me. I do try to take care off myself an eat right. If I know most men they never see the doctor until a lot off times its too late. Ive known several people around me all men who just dropped dead of heart attacks with no warning. They had no symptons or they had warning sighns they ignored. Problem is they should be alive today. I hope on day they have a heart scan that is part off every physical or Doctors visit. Hey guys if something isnt right see the doctor. Before its too late. Hey I like to live Im sure you do to.

My experiences with doctors is that my wallet is much lighter when I do see them.

You see?, no insurance.

Other than that, most of the doctors I've seen have been pretty good.

On the downside I go once every 3 months to have them check my BP.

On the upside they give me free sample medication; which by far outweighs
the cost of the visits.

I work with a team of 5 doctors everyday(I'm an Internal medicine Lab Tech). I can tell you, they are moody just like all of us, some days they are really grumpy like all of us get on some days. Other days all is well. It's just that since most people don't see them every day(hopefully not) if you happen to have your appointment on a crappy day for that doc, you will go the next 6 months till your next appt. thinking that your doctor is a jerk. I can say truthfully that being a physician is really stressfull, peoples lives literally rest in your hands. That and the fact that they went through over a decade of college is why they make the money they do. I wouldn't want to do it for their wages. No way.

it's not a popularity contest, it's about the quality of care. I've seen fat doctors that smoke like freight trains.

I wonder what Doctors eat. Do they eat all the health foods they tell us to eat. Or do they go for a pizza and a beer. Most Doctors I see are thin an in good shape. Must be kinds funny for a fat doctor to tell a guy to lose a few pounds

I happen to like my new doctor. He's an oriental guy. This is the second time I've had him as my doc.. We just moved back into the area and he's within walking distance. You don't make an appointment, you just get there early enough to be high on the list. He also take my insurance which helps.

I just want to know what the great conspircy is with office waiting times. Do they think we value them higher because we wait to see them? The government couldn't run the system any worse than it is now, I say nationlize them to knock them down a peg.
