460 valvetrain guru's

OK...so I bought me a '78 Bronco with a 460 in it. Someone has gone through the engine (Edelbrock Performer 460 intake, Holly 650, new electronic distributor, and some nice paint...that's all I can see from the outside).

My question is how do you adjust the valves/rockers/pushrods? While idling, and under load, the valvetrain makes a horrible racket! I've never had to go inside an engine before, and before I study the books for a couple hours, I'd like to get ya'lls opinion on it.

I took the valve cover breather off and could see "Competition" on one of the internals...so who knows what kind of rockers/valves/springs are in it. The Bronco is still at my friends house, and I'm hoping to trailer it home this weekend so I can tear into it and get her purring like a kitten.

well type of rockers makes a difference, if they are pedestal mount (stock style for 72 and later model engines) then they are bolt down and go, you can shim them or get different pushrods but thats the only way to adjust them. If they are stock stud type on earlier heads, basically they are still positive stop so you adjust with pushrods, but if aftermarket stud mounted rockers you have to go through all the valves and adjust according to type of cam and cam recommendations.

Thanks for the help Monster. I hope its not the latter, as the only way to tell what cam is in it would be to tear it down and hope to find a PN on it. Once I get it home this weekend (I hope so) then I will take pictures.

I read in the book about pushrods that were .060 shorter or longer to adjust them, but I didn't get much farther than that.

Oh, and how would you go about replacing the pushrods? Just remove (or turn the rockers out of the way) and pull them out?

The shim kit would be the easiest with the stock set up.

Bump.

Sorry I haven't been around. Been very busy lately with the Bronco, and I've been spending my time at www.460ford.com learning all about my situation.

I have a C9VE block (1969 Lincoln), with D0VE-A heads. Comp-Cams 1.72 roller rockers...still don't know what cam is in it...probably won't know until she blows and I take her out to rebuild it.

Anyways...I need to adjust the rockers, do a compression test, check/set the timing, and play around with the carb. I'll probably have to run race gas or avgas through it, as the D0VE heads make for some high compression...especially if I have flat-top pistons.

Found a guide to adjusting the rockers too:

I have the same set up. It was a real pia to get a socket on them & there is no way to adjust them with it running, the socket could bind and bend the stud. Maby Comp Cams makes a special socket for them, I don't know. I ended up switching to poly locks & used a dial indicator to set the preload.

Well...the engine is gone. #6 is dead. Something or another got in there and tore up the plug and piston. I'm thinking a valve seat fell out and was bouncing around in there for a good while...

0psi compression

RIP

Might take it to the machine shop to have it fixed if I can do the price...
