I need some help! I have an 85 f350 with an automatic & 460. It's a non emissions vehicle. I'm trying to figure out ways to get better gas mileage. It has the stock holley carb on it & basically it's all stock except for the MSD coil I put on it. I was once told by a guy the he had one like mine & he put an Edlebrock carb on it & it helped his gas mileage. Basically I just use it to tow my race car because I can't afford to drive it anywhere else!
Slow down, I drive my 1984 F250 Supercab, Super Duty, 460 with C-6 with 4.10 rearend and picked up a couple of mpg by just slowing down to 55 to 58 mph max.
do what I do with my 89' 460 and all, go ***** to the wall that'll gitcha some gas mileage, although it will cost more in the long run. just kiddin, Bear 45/70 has the right idea just reduce your speed about 5 mph and take off the line slow and steady. No need to race a truck to prove anything.

Better than what? It's a 460..
You can't expect THAT much motor to get any kind of mileage. They just were not built for economy, they were built to pull. That many cubic inches will never get "good" mileage.
There's some good info in that, although a lot of it revolves around a FI 460, not carburated, some of it will still work...but don't expect much out of a 460 in the fuel stingy department.
These motors are what they are, and at some point it stops being worth spending money to save money..You can throw all kinds of cash at it, and get a couple miles per gallon extra. How much you drive it determines how cost effective it is. What I'm trying to say is, it makes no sense to spend a thousand dallars to save a couple hundred.

ZOMG! makes since the 460 gets the best gas milage when the key is out of it. with the price of gas i retired mine to a toy/work truck.
Try gettin rid of the Holley carb for starters. Mine had the Holley on it , I swapped the holley out for a factory Autolite and changed the intake to a spread bore insead of the square bore for the Holley, gas milage went from 9mpg to 13/14 mpg. There was a slight loss of power on the low side but A gain of power where you want it.

Increased mileage with a spread bore over square is no surprise, but your numbers are a bit unbelivable without a total driving style change. You do know that Holley has a spread bore carb that is twice as simple to tune as the autolite or a quadrajunk, etc carb.

No the numbers are just as I said and I was pleasently surprised with the change, keeping in mind my milage is in Canadian gallons. As far as the Holley thing does, I just don't like them and never did. Yes the autolite is a little harder to set up but for me it was worth it. And there was no change in driving style ----I use the 460, my Father runs a 460 and is as gentle as he can be on it and has always gotten 16/17 in a supercab 77 150 and 12/13 towing.

I would have to see that to believe that. If you can get that kind of mileage out of a 460 you better go into business and sell that. There are some of us on this board that were born in the morning but NOT THIS MORNING. I'm a retired mechanic I have never seen 16-17 MPG out of any 460 ever.

Well I guess if you never seen it, then it MUST be wrong. As I stated earlier, this is CANADIAN gallons which at 16mpg converts to a number you may like better, 13.5 mpg U.S. gallons. Which would also put my 13 mpg 460 at 11 MPG U.S. I have a travel long from every year we travalled using that truck and it's steady at 320kms/ 16 gallon tank
320 X .62 =198 MPG
198/16= 12.4 MPG Can or 10.5 MPG U.S. towing a trailer.
I guess my math has been wrong for 12 years, and the original owners log that claimed 9.5 to 10.5 MPG with the Holley Carb must be wrong also.
IF YOUR BASICALLY GOING TO CALL A PERSON A LIER, PROVE IT !!!!!!!!!!
