I have searched through the general Super Duty forums and found one question on this that went unanswered so I thought I'd post it here even though it's not specifically a PSD question. I applied the parking brake on the my truck this morning and the cable snapped at the pedal. The pedal is now firmly stuck in the down position and the brake warning light is permanently on.
My Haynes manual has nothing on replacing that cable for some reason - anyone here have any good info on how to replace that cable, any gotchas to watch out for etc. etc.
BTW, am I just being cynical or is the fact that this just happened shortly after having the CPS recall done at the stealership just a coincidence? My Brother was an auto mechanic for 15 years and would always tell me how sometimes they would introduce little problems when doing recall work so that they would get customer-paid follow-up work. Anyone else have mysterious minor issues after recall work?
If the cable snapped you should be able to easily lift the pedal by hand.
As for replacing it, it's pretty straight forward. Attach it to the pedal assembly, then (making sure the pedal is all the way up) attach it under the cab at the "coupler"
So it won't budge when you pull on the release handle and try and lift the pedal?
When mine snapped right at the pedal all I had to do was pull the release and that thing would drop to the floor by itself...pull the release and easily lift it up.
Like DC said you should be able to just pull the release and easily lift it up on the pedal. By the way when mine snapped on my 99' (see my sig below) I had just gotten a recall the week before. Perfect timing! So, I had the dealer do it for free! Good luck!
Yep, the release locks the pedal assembly in place...and without the cable, there is nothing to automatically pull the pedal back up when you just pull the release.
Install is pretty easy.
If I remember correctly you'll need to push the pedal down to be able to view where the cable connects to the assembly. Then raise the pedal fully and connect it under the truck.
