why rebuild a 400
} so I am in no hurry. I will be using the stock heads on it. These are what I believe are 2v heads. And I was planing to go back with just stock pistons. {new of course} But I don't have a clue as to what to use for a cam or intake. I heard a few mentioned, but would love some recomendations. All I want out of this bear { for now} is a great runing road and work truck. How good are the stock distributers that are on these engines. should I upgrade that also. Plus I do not have a carb. for this yet. Any suggestions.if you want to build a good/great 400 do the research here and then make choices. You want to build the block to '71 standards or better. Do NOT use stock pistons. Get a rebuild kit from TMI (sponsor) He will sell you the best kb pistons available for the stock heads for 180 bucks. That will give you the right compression and quench to kick some hiney. Then you will want to look at the cam- again not stock. Ck out the spec of the Comp cams 262deh and Tim can get you that as well for less than comp will sell it to you- In fact...call him and get a build sheet from him and he'll give you a price on parts and all the help you could possibly need/want. TMI is not a clearing house but he is very reasonable and having him in your corner when your working with a machine shop that probably has no clue as to how to properly build a 400 will be nice. If your building it yourself like I am you will be glad you know him.
ck out his site- research '400 build' in the search function and then start making the choices.
a good solid build with tims pistons in my opinion would be the 262 or 268 range cam, edelbrock intake and 600cfm carb, roller rockers, true roller chain with 3 key timing sprocket to go in straight up.
Machine work: Make sure you have block line bored- heads ckd and milled, rotating part balanced- get a decent dampner/balancer. yada yada.
did i hear you say it has a 302 in it right now??? if so that means tranny change...right?
