Have look at this pic.To me the way you described the 78 and later pump's,this look's like a later type.
That doesn't even look right, that tube has an extreme bend to it...not something Ford would do...the tube is twisted and kinked, and looks like it was "bent to fit" by a former owner.
The pre 1978 P/S pressure hose just screws on to the pump, there's no O-ring on the flared end of the tube.
The 1978 and later hoses have a short straight tube (no flare) with a small O-ring on it roughly 3/4's to one inch from the end of the tube.
The following info is Rated R.
The 1978 and later P/S pressure hose's male tube with its O-ring is inserted into the pumps female fitting...then it's tightened up.
That tube had me wondering about the bend in it as well. The bend is tight,it's almost kinked.I've ordered a new p/s pump, hopefully it comes in today.I have another one of these truck's,I looked at the p/s pump on it,and like you say NumberDummy, the hose is quite different.

I guess I should take the hose from the other truck.

I don't think they make Type F fluid anymore, Isn't it now Mercon?
I can't remember the last time I saw type F, Mercon/Dexron is all in one now, at least thats what I use at work. Last ime I saw type F it was in a Steel can, and that ws in the early 80's.
