Ram assist should be able to use standard p.s. fluid, A/T Fluid, even some lighter grader hydraulic fluids. It's only the rack and pinion types that are fairly easy to screw up, found on later models.
O.K,that is a bit of a relief.I got concerned,I did quite a bit of research on this forum. It came up alot,to use the atf type f.I was thinking that the power steering fluid is too thin.Maybe a new pump is in need.
Oops. Meant ATF works fine. Sorry. hard to screw them up, short of using water...
FYI: You can edit your posts for up to one hour. Most ppl read thru the thread several times, and quickly learn to back up and read previous posts. Good thing too...I usually edit my posts several times once the brain gets into gear!
you can use p.s. fluid, or ATF. Makes no difference. If it's making noise, try some additive made for power steering before replacing it. Don't want to ruffle feathers, so I won't mention my personal preference...

Replacing the P/S pump? MAKE SURE you use a pump from 1977 or earlier.
The 1978 pumps have different fittings and use different P/S pressure hoses that have an "O" Ring on the male tube end. 1978 and later: You slip the pressure hose's male tube into the pumps fitting, then tighten up the nut.
1977 and earlier P/S pressure hoses will NOT work on 1978 and later pumps.
