E40D Question???

I believe the trany is shot in my 1994 f250 4x4 7.3 IDI. The trany is a E40D and has a 4 bolt TC.
My parts truck is a 1995 F250 4x4 7.3 DI Powerstroke. It also has a E40D with a 6 bolt TC.
Will the trany from my 95 parts truck work with my 94, as long as the input shaft for the trany is the same? All the wiring plugs look to be the same.
Any help would be apprieciated. Thanks

Graham

The R4100 and newer E4OD can be used on 7.3 IDIs but I have not been able to find the change over info/how too yet........ sorry. The main point you need to know is whether you use the 4 bolt TC and IDI drive plate or 6 bolt TC and redrill the IDI drive plate. PSD and IDI drive plates are different and not interchangeable.

Thanks for the reply,
What I would like to do is take the E40D and the 6 bolt TC from my doner (95 powerstroke) and install in my 94 IDI, which currently has a E40d with the 4 bolt TC.
I pulled the inspection cover off and the flex plate on the 94 looks like it has the holes to accept the 6 bolt too. Tomorrow I will drop the trany. If it has both sets of holes (4 & 6 bolt) I will take pics and post. Thanks for your help

Update

I finally got the trany on the ground. I was mistaken about the flex plate having bolt holes to accept both 4 and 6 bolt converters.
I now have my doner set up and getting ready to dissmantle. I will pull the motor and trany together out of the doner, I think that will be easier than dropping the trany. Chances are that I will be diving into a motor / trany swap. Will be a big job. I will post some pics when I figure out how.
Also, the trany I pulled had some fluid comming out the breather on the top of the trany. I am guessing that there was fluid bypassing in the case???

Not heard of anyone doing the engine and trans together, that is way too much weight and I do not think you can physically get it out together........

Well, I got the motor and trany out of my doner today. It was too tight to pull the motor and trany togeather so I separated them. It was still very tight, but they are on the ground.
The doner truck has them spring lock fuel line fittings. So I went to town thismorning and bought a disconect tool. WHAT A PIECE OF JUNK. I ended up chopping the hoses and I'll make up hoses with Ferrel crimp fittings.
I was hoping to install the trany from the doner (1995 psd) into the 1994 black s / c 7.3 idi, but the flex plates are different. So I am going ahead with the motor / trany swap.

I thought I had it rough workin in a small garage with no heat. I really don't think I would be swapping motors outside up in CANADA in the winter in mud/snow. Big props to you. I bet you eat nuts and bolts for breakfast

All that mud reminds me of when I pulled my E4OD from a parts donor. I had a better shop to work in when it came time to put it into my truck, so it was a little easier to swallow that bitter pill when I found out that a 460 bellhousing in fact did NOT fit the diesel

Have you thought of taking the torque converter off the 94 trans and putting it on the 96 trans? might be easier than swapping a powerstroke engine with all the related electronics.

Yes I had thought of swaping TC's but I don't want to trust the TC that was on the bad trany. Also the 94 7.3 IDI has 350,000 km's and is getting a bit tired, where as the 95 PSD has about 150,000km's and has good pony's.
