I believe the trany is shot in my 1994 f250 4x4 7.3 IDI. The trany is a E40D and has a 4 bolt TC.
My parts truck is a 1995 F250 4x4 7.3 DI Powerstroke. It also has a E40D with a 6 bolt TC.
Will the trany from my 95 parts truck work with my 94, as long as the input shaft for the trany is the same? All the wiring plugs look to be the same.
Any help would be apprieciated. Thanks
I just swapped one from a 1989 van 7.3 IDI to a 1996 F250 DI had to change the torque converter from a 4 bolt to a 6 bolt. The solenoid pack had to be swapped because of the plug and also the shift lever on the side was interchanged. I would go with a new heavy duty torque converter the old one is probably trashed.
Thanks for the reply. I am going to spend the next couple days and drop the trany's from both trucks. Hopefully the 6 bolt TC from my 95 will bolt up to the 94 flexplate.
I am also looking at doing a complete motor / trany swap. There will be some wiring harnesses to swap, but I know the motor/trany from the 95 is in good cond, fairly low miles. I will post when I know what I am doing. Thanks again
The 6 bolt wont work. The complete swap would be the way to go if you could get past the wiring issues. I dont know about the oil pan or clearance issues. You might check with someone that has done this before it looks like a pain.
It's been awhile so my memory isn't fresh, but I think the 6 bolt flex plate will work on the older engine so that you can use the 6 bolt converter. I would not install a converter from a failed trans unless it was cut open to clean and inspect it.
Thanks for the replys. I was under the truck yesterday and the 94 IDI with the failed E40D Looks like the flex plate has the 6 bolt pattern to accept the TC and E40D from my 95 powerstroke. I am dropping the trany today, so I will know more later.
One other thing, I am leaving the transfer case attached to the trany, I will find out if this is the easy way to go, I just don't see the point in separating them if I don't have too??? Thanks again
