it's because of the change over in body styles. you will find some '97 models that were actually manufactured in early '98 but they were from remaining parts prior to the release of the newer body style.

They didn't make a heavy duty truck in 98. There was a F-250 light duty (97 F-150 body style but no heavy duty 250 or 350 due to the 99 Superduty change over

They didn't make any heavy duty trucks that they called 1998. They ended '97 model year late and started the '99 model year early, but the plant was only shut down for a short time to change to the new model.

It has to do with Federal Emissions certification. By doing this Ford saved a lot of money by not certifying a 1998 model.

yup, what they said, my truck is technicly a 98 with the build date but from ford its still a 97 for production purposes. and for aftermarket parts sake, i tell tehm its a 96....lol dont ever ask for parts for a 97 f-250, even if you tell them its old body style, over 8500gvw, and a diesel, they will still get you parts for a 97 light duty. happens every time! they screwed me again when i went in to get a new blower motor, they had to special order it and when it came in i said "no way, thats wrong"
they orderd for the f-150/LD250 the right one had been on the shelf the whole time and was cheaper too! enough rambling, i'm done

I do the same thing Joe. Never order for a 97. I always order parts for a 96!
