Darn Computer
While watching "How I met your mother" season 2 on my computer, the motherboard decided that it wanted to have a little light and smoke show. While the computer is still capable of being started and run, I figure it's best not to. I'm on my brothers computer so I'm gonna be down till tomorrow night. Of course my type of motherboard has been discontinued so I have to upgrade. Now to decide between AMD Phenom or Intel Core Duo.

I'm leaning for the Core Duo which would be my first Intel purchase in like 5 years.
AMD isn't gonna go out of business, it's just about as likely as GM, Chrysler or Ford going belly up. The whole computer industry would be screwed if it was only Intel left. AMD and Cyrix (anyone remember them?) has made Intel improve their products and cut the prices. Cyrix pretty much single handily brought about the budget computers. Intel had to make the Celeron to compete. If you look back a couple years, AMD's Athlon processors were mopping the floor with the Pentium 4's. Intel was selling processors to Dell at pretty much cost to keep their market share. The computer industry has had it's ups and downs on both sides. AMD was winning in the 486's and Intel didn't have a clear lead until the pentium II. The K6-II/III's didn't have the motherboard platform to compete with the Pentium II/III. The Athlon changed everything for AMD, just like the Core processors brought Intel out of second place.

Well my computer is gonna be down for a couple more days. I got a hardware conflict which is preventing it from booting. I just don't have the parts needed to do a full diagnostic, if it was an older system I could. I dropped it off at OTVTech
As far as upgradabilty goes, it's always a crapshoot. Both AMD and Intel's current socket as over half their lifespan already. Even if Intel is still using the socket 775 next year, the older socket 775 boards can't run the newer processors because it doesn't have the required frontside bus and memory settings.
