Cleaning turbo, do it at home or leave it to a shop?

In the middle of an egr/oil cooler replacement, doing the work myself, and wondering about cleaning the turbo. Is it something that's best left for a shop, or should I go at it myself?

I agree. Do it yourself, get to know your truck.

Okay, will do.

Also, I was wondering if there's anything I can look for while she's stripped down to show sure signs of a blown head gasket. Trucks symptoms were of a bad egr cooler but I'd hate to get everything bolted back on and turn out I have a bigger problem on my hands.

Really no visual signs. Best thing to do before you start tearing down is to put a simple pressure gauge between the degas bottle and small hose from the radiator and run wot and see you pressure. Anything over 14 or 15 would be a good sign of hg. Do you have a lot of pressure in the degas bottle after sitting over night? Also a sign.

Can you clean the unison ring very well without an air tool to polish it?

And thanks for the link!
You should be able to. It will just take more time with hand work.

Sean

EDIT : In that TSB they are talking about a serviceable heat exchanger and not having to replace the oil cooler
What is this about?

Originally the oil cooler wasn't available seperately, therefore, if it plugged the entire baseplate was replaced as a unit.
