Ok here's the deal I have a '97 with a 5.4 and the engine has given up the ghost. I found an '03 5.4 from a truck that had been rolled with only 2500 miles on it. Will she drop in and bolt right up? What do i need to know.
welcome to FTE.as far as i know i believe it will bolt up with no problems, however im not sure if you would have to change computers to run it.im sure someone will come along and answer this question .i too have been wondering about this. what happened to your 5.4 exactly?
I say it has given up the ghost, that's not exactly true. The trunk has 193k on her, and now has 0 compression on cylinder #7 so i'm assuming burnt valve or burnt piston. I havn't yanked it apart yet to see, at anyrate I'm figuring a valve job will be around 500-700 dollars, and a complete rebuild will be more, I found the engine for around 1400 so i'm thinking i'll just spend the money now and drop a 'new' engine in and be done so i don't have to go pulling it again in a few years.
should swap straight across, and the computers will work fine, im not sure if the exact tuning is the same , but it will probably run better because the newer motor will have PI heads, vs your 97' will have non PI heads, its a boost of about 30hp and 10ftlb
Do a quick check to compare the electrical connections. I'd thought that FORD changed the style of electrical connectors between those years. Compare to judge if the wiring will be compatible or you'll need to swap components. Otherwise it should bolt up.
the 4.6l had coilpacks, but the 5.4l has always had the COP system, im pretty sure it wont matter if he uses all the electronics off of his current 5.4l...the only difference will be the heads, but its just in the porting and the cams
There are some differences on the '99+ connections and fuel system but you would be using your '97 harness and fuel rail so it should be darn close to plug and play. The newer motor will have an "extra" sensor or two that would probably just be left unplugged since your harness wouldn't have the connections.
what plugs are you talking about? because my 4.6l was non pi meaning it was the same as 97-98-99 and my 5.4l was a 2002 and actually my 4.6l had one more plug on it for the variable volume intake which the 5.4l dosnt have....
