5.4 noise

welcome to the club.No noise when cold. After warm up noise at idle.No noise above 1000rpm.Valve cam sensor problem.Had mine changed not as bad with new sensor but still there.Dealer said we will change it again some times it takes several changes to get a good one. I heard that in March Ford will have an inproved sensor. Good luck. For a truck that is advertised to be and is so quiet on the road this problem shoots holes in their advertisement

Yeah i think thats how mine is only when warmed up. I notice it big time when backing into my garage or at a drive through where it echos off a wall.

my 5.4 can sound like a diesal if you listen perfectly. But once you start moving the V8 kicks in.

Yeah, I noticed that when warm... has that bit of a diesel clatter. A very very VERY quiet diesel.

Must be the 10.0:1 compression.

04-20-6 TICKING OR KNOCKING NOISE COMING FROM THE CATALYTIC CONVERTERS

Publication Date: October 1, 2004

FORD: 1997-1998 F-250 LD
1997-2003 F-150

ISSUE:
Some 1997-2003 F-150 vehicles equipped with any engine, and 1997-1998 F-250 LD vehicles equipped with the 5.4L engine, may exhibit a ticking or knocking noise coming from the catalytic converters. The noise may be described as sounding like a diesel engine. The condition will be present when the vehicle is in gear at idle only, and is more pronounced when the vehicle is stationary, such as sitting in a drive-through line. The noise is normal, and is created by engine pulses being amplified through the light-off converters.

ACTION:
DO NOT replace converters unless loose internal components are found. To reduce the noise, install a wrap kit on each of the light-off converters. Refer to the instruction sheet included in the kit.

I have the diesel clatter noise too and its coming from the engine bay. I haven't asked my dealer about it yet. But it only does it when warmed up. in relation to the catalytic converters i had an old range rover for a couple of years with that same rattle from the catalytic converters it finally corrected itself when the entire exhuast system left the vehicle from the manifolds back on i 95 one night. talk about a loud drive home.

FYI, one of the good things I can say about my 2004 F150 was that the engine was very quiet. The truck had 8000 miles on it when I dumped it. I own a diesel VW and it doesn't make any loud noise. I know that older diesel trucks are very loud but I'm sure that modern ones aren't. VW makes quiet diesels so why wouldn't Ford?

2001 Jetta 132,000 miles, 50+ mpg. Best vehicle I've ever owned. Doesn't vibrate, shake or shimmy. However, VW customer service is almost as bad as Ford.
