Just picked up a '68 429 ThunderJet for my '78 f150 with manual trans. Wondering what flywheel I should buy to fit my 351M bellhousing. I was told that a flywheel from a 360 FE motor would work (smaller diameter than 460 flywheel, correct crank bolt pattern, and neutral balance).
Hope someone knows what application will work... I'd hate to pay $350 for a new "429/460 swap flywheel" if I could simply buy a good factory flywheel from a different application.
Find the FE flywheel. Mine came from a 360 three on the tree. The only issue I had with it was the clutch springs hit the heads of the flywheel bolts. I solved that problem by buying bolts with shorter heads. (Flywheel too thin?) I used an 11" Centerforce Dual Friction clutch, but if I had to do it again, I would use a 12" unit.
Find a bare block, crank and some crank bearings, stuff that in first to make sure everything fits correctly, then mess around with putting in the real engine.
