I bought a 1997 F250 with a 5.8. It didn't start and i lookoed to see what wass up. Ends up the motor was locked down, so I bought another motor to put in. Lucky enough I found a 97 F250 like mine that ran and i pulled the motor and put it in mine. Well I got it all put back together and went to start it and nothing. Well it does turn a little, verylittle. When I turn the key you can hear the solenoid click but the motor just barely turns about a half inch with every turn of the key. I turned it a couple of times but the starter got hot so I quit. I thought it was the battery and installed the battery out of my wirk truck and still the same. I jumped the solenoid and still the same thing it barely turns. I pulled the starter and hooked the charger to tit ans it works. What is causing this? What am i missing?
Something is binding up, Did the torque converter slide out a little when you took the old engine out?
Since the old engine was locked up when you bought it, I would check to see if the starter needed a spacer and the PO never put one in. Maybe there was nothing wrong with the old engine, just the starter binding! Try turning over the engine with the starter removed, using your breaker bar.
I bet if you remove the torque converter bolts the motor will crank fine. If so that means the tranny is junk, or you have the wrong flexplate on the motor and the TC is pushed back too far and binding the pump.
Thanks for all the replies. I will try taking the bolt out of the torque converter and spinning it. IF so I will see if maybe the torque converter slid out when We put it back together. Thanks again guys you all have been a big help.
Problem solved!! I unbolted the torque converter and it spun easily. I then pulled the transmision far enough to reach in and reinstall the torque converter. bolted it all back up and it turned easy and started up right away and runs great. Thanks to all that replied you all really helped me out thanks again.
