351W overheating

i have an 82 f250 with a 351w. I bought the engine new a year ago, finished installing it in march, and it has been overheating ever since. I put a new thermostat, water pump, all of that stuff on it with the new engine. Replaced the thermostat again a month ago, I started it up last week, it ran about 5 minutes, and the factory temp gauge was pegged out. I shut it off and put my hand on the head, and it wasnt hot. So i went to the parts house and picked up an aftermarket gauge. I took it back and hooked it up, started the truck, it warmed up to 195, the thermostat opened, and then it dropped a little. It ran right around 190 for a few minutes, then it started climbing up. At idle speed, it went up to around 205, and i decided to take it out the road, in the process of the drive, which was about a quarter mile, it went up to 230, i took it back and parked it. I am frustrated with this as its been a year and i still cant drive it, ive tried everything i can think of, but im not a certified mechanic, just know enough to get me by. Give me all your ideas. Thanks

Have you got any coolant in with the oil or white smoke comming out the exhaust. Overheating is most often a result of a cracked head or blow head gasket, but it could also simply be the result of an air pocket in the motor. I suggest removing the thermostst completely and reconnecting the plumbing, and then run the motor with the front of the vehicle uphill and the rad cap removed. You should see coolant circulating through the rad and if there are any air pockets the level will drop. If this doesn't happen and the motor stll overheats then there is something wrong inside the motor and you will have to go in and find out what it is.

Make sure you dont have an excess amount of gasket sealer on the thermostate housing. If the small bypass hole has any restriction it will overheat. I got mine pluged up one time.

I have to save this stuff...........

The gasket is made to the exact shape of the block and heads.... where the two come together the head gasket is flush with the block and heads..... except on the front lower (outer) corners..it sticks out an little... see pic below, take a look of feel...for those tabs they should be on the front.

if the gaskets are on backwards the tabs will be on the rear corners... what happens is the water takes a shortcut and bypasses the back side of the heads... the water should enter the head from the rear of the block and exit the front through the intake then out the thermostat. If the gasket is on backwards it enters the front of the head from the block and exits the front of the head to the intake, so no flow thru the head....

look at the pic you can see where the ports are only opened on one end of the gasket and not the other. those ports should go toward the rear... keeps all the water flowing through the head..

Hopes this helps.... I should save this... I've typed it a few time now...

hey i appreciate the help, i will check that out when i get back to where the truck is at. I think they are on there right though, because when i first put the intake back on, i forgot to tighten down the back bolt on the drivers side, and water poured out of it, but i will check to be sure, thanks!

you never answered if your radiator has been flushed? a new rad is maybe $130 bucks and would be well worth it.
