yes cause if you dont have a fmx block and you are insistant ona fmx or aod tranny, you get to spend more money on an adapter plate.
btw, i picked up 3 400 blocks, 1 was an fmx, the pefious owner "modded" the engine into a 7 cylinder block.

I wouldn't say an adapter is needed to retain the FMX but you would have to change to a different FMX bellhousing. I didn't know Ford made these until I stumbled across one on Ebay a couple weeks ago.

This is a factory Ford aluminum bell housing for a FMX automatic transmission that fits the 351M, 400, 429, and 460 Ford motors.Part # RF-D3AP-7976-AA Decent shape, no cracks, striped holes, or other damage.
