Royal Purple
The Royal Purple at that price was on sale at a local Volkswagen Motorsports store, where they specialize in performance parts for VW's, Bugs, Dune Buggys, GTI's, kind of a speciality store for VW's, and they also sell stuff (special order) for Porsche's and Audi's. A friend of my son is into performance VWs, so one Saturday recently my son and I stopped in there. While browsing I saw their Royal Purple display, they also sold Pennzoil, Castrol, Red Line, Valvoline, Kendall GTI, Conoco and a German speciality synthetic oil that was $8.95 a quart. (The name escapes me at the moment, of that synthetic import oil). So, it's not a national chain, but I see you are on the east coast (me the west coast) but check around in your area at some independant stores like that. Maybe you jave your own VW shop, JEEP, 4X4 and off road centers also stock various synthetic oils. Many of these shops sell oil at their cost, or slightly higher, just to get you in their doors.
Also, many boating dealers / waterski accessories shops sell oil, because guys that tow boats, like to use synthetic oil / trans oil in their tow vehicles, another place nobody knows of (for the most part) to get a variety of oil you might not see at your local auto parts place.
I also consider Mobil 1 a very good oil, and would not hesitate to use it if it was close in price (slightly higher or lower) than Royal Purple.
RP's "Purple Ice" is also a great product to add to your radiator as well. I flush my cooling system once a year whether it needs it or not. I use 30% coolant, (Peak or Zerex G-5) 70% distilled water, and never have a cooling problem in 100+ degree California summer heat. I always add either Red Line's Water Wetter or Purple Ice as I just mentioned. 8-10oz of a product called NoRoison (looks like red wine) is another tip.
