I have a 96, and when i bought it it would barely start in 50 degree weather. Well since then I replaced the GP's, GPR, Fuel Pump in valley, Starter, Alternator, Batteries, Valve cover gasket/wiring harnesses, and a windshield wiper relay.. The stuff wasn't out, just thought I would replace it all since the rig had exactly 200k miles on it. Now to the question. It has done this since I have had it. When starting it smokes forever, looks like a dark grey smoke. The other morning I fired it up and let it warm up for about 30 minutes. It was cold, and I figured that would be enough time. Well it was warmed up fine, but still smoking. It smoked until I got it out on the highway (about a mile at 30mph). Once I got it on the highway and it hit about 2k rms and the turbo spooled up it smoked really bad for about 5 seconds and then cleaned itself out. After that initial smokefest it only blurts out rolling smoke when I stand on it to pass someone..It seems fine for the rest of the day as well with shutdowns and restarts..Only happens when it has been sitting for over 5 hours or so. I know these are cold blooded, but I don't really need to be fogging for mosquitoes in the winter. It does it in the summer as well, just not quite as bad. I am afraid that some of the covenant members of the housing division I live in will start complaining. I have replaced the small stuff thinking that would clear it up, but with no avail. What else could it possibly be? Injectors? Injector O-Rings? Those are what I am leaning towards pretty hard. I have searched the forums but found nobody describing the "exact" problem I am having. Even the white smoke thread basically breaks it down to GPR and GP's. Oh, and BTW I had the first O/D flash come on last week. The stock E40d made it 200k, so this spring I will be upgrading the tranny as well. Oh, and BTW. This is a stock 7.3 no tuner or chips. Only change is the air filter upgrade.
i am curious as to how you can blow a smoke fest when you pass someone? is this black smoke or white? you shuoldnt be blowing any smoke with a stock truck going down the road,
my truck acts as yours does on cold starts though, my glowplugs, harnesses and relay are good as yours is yet i can smoke like a freight train on cold start and after a few hours i will smoke still, but not as bad as overnight.
mine will stop smoking after its driven for a few miles, yours smokes all the time? cold and hot? and only stops when the turbo spools up?
if that is correct it sounds like a leaking injector dumping excess fuel, it should be white smoke. if that is the case you should have a rough idle too.
if she idles good then pop the aircleaner and check for a dusted turbo blade, also check for excessive oil coming from the crankcase vent.
I have tried it plugged in and not plugged in. I pulled the air filter this morning and the turbo blades don't have any pitting at all, and look sharp it does idle fine. I did notice the breather on the VC had a bit of excessive oil on it. Could that be causing the problem. This morning I tested it out (plugged in overnight), and it was about 16 degrees. The smoke smelled like raw diesel, I let it warm up for about 20 minutes, and it was still smoking. Same thing, when I got on the highway and it got some good rpm's and it cleared up. I guess as long as it clears up then I can live with it, but I don't like the little problems that could come up from this. Thanks for your help again...
My injector o-rings on my rig where shot and it would smoke like no tomorrow on a good startup. I would label it as "foggin!" However, it cleared up when I got the egt's a little highwer while going down the road.
Maybe your block heater is not working? Check the resistance on it. I believe if it's lower than 15 ohm's your alright.
Here's a link to my truck on a cold start up. It smokes pretty good, but I would say that this is normal. Espeically while running an ICP mode. It will still smoke ever so lightly until the egt's get up to 300 or so. The OBS doesn't have an intake heater like the newer ones, so that might be another reason why they smoke a little more. Hope this helps.
I have this SAME EXACT problem with my 97 and im still trying to find out the problem. Im sending my injectors in to jim for a stage 1 rebuild so im hoping maybe this cures the problem.
Try the diesel site 203* thermostat. might help once it's warm. dont have one, but have heard good things. and it sounds to me like incomplete combustion... so ya, maybe too much fuel? maybe oil or water in the fuel? check the fuel filter?
I dont think it should even put out white smoke once its slightly warm. 2nd day i had mine, it was 15* at 6 in the morning when i went to leave. it did that for about 20 sec. after startup, then went away.

this is where I want mine to be. I guess I'll do a search on Injectors. what tests are available for the injectors. The mechanics shop at my work just spent around 8,000 on a new mac scanner. WOuld this have a feature to test out the injectors.

If it does turn out to be injectors, just go for stage 1's from DIY injectors (aka rosewood diesel shop) it's not too much money, and it'll be worth it. comes with all needed to do rebuild as well. check here: http://www.diy-injectors.com/
i want stage 3's....
