It's always either money or time. Now that you have time, there is no money. That's life. Retirement is still better than the alternative.
That's why I'm doing both, now...I work a LOT of overtime, plus spend a LOT of time in the shop (along with WAY too much time in front of the 'puter )
I wear myself pretty thin, but I hope to have ALL the major work done before I retire, plus any parts I'll need afterwards, so that I can enjoy my retirement, should I live so long. But, if I don't, at least I'll have enjoyed the ride. I think that's all most of us can hope for.
Nah, they gots their OWN problems...think I'll stick to haranguing the '48-'50 crowd...THEY'RE the ones who use all the cab parts we '51/'52 owners need...
Roger,
Is one of the parts you're referring to the stainless windshield trim? The do look nice on my trucks I have three of them, one on my '49 F-2, one for the '48 panel, going on this summer, and one for the F-4.
Yeah, they're nice. None for me, thanks, at $200 a pop on epuke. Mine is pretty much a standard cab, so I'll keep it that way.
But, everything else is pretty much the same - doors, corners, etc, etc. I really don't need anything except perhaps the bottom foot around the rear of the cab. some mud in there, but livable.
Seems to me the hardest thing to find is the bed stuff - rear fenders, etc. I am going to build my own cross supports, they were wood on the F2's and above. My bed has nothing, except front and rear. Hard to store parts in that way!! Well, the big stuff - gas tank, seats, running boards are in there but nothing small. Drop right through, and join the other parts on the floor!
I'm still dedicated to stay away from buying a "parts" truck...don't want any new "project" trucks!!
I watch them on uPay, they're like the radios for the '48-50 trucks, the bidders go goofy. I got the first one about 25 years ago, I got it at a swap meet, it came with two absolute mint doors and hood for $100. I got a two or three big boxes of extra parts with the deal, when I got home I tore into the boxes and found the trim piece. The second one I bought from an online web site in ND for $45, that was before uPay and the prices online went nuts. The third I bought two years at another swap meet, it was sitting on a rusted out piece of junk of cab. I asked the guy what he wanted for the trim piece, he said $10. I couldn't get my knife out fast enough to cut it out of the rubber. I have seen them go on uPay for over $250! That's nuts.

They really do dress up the truck though.
Yeah, that's true. Too much for my blood.
Thanks to Casey, I have a stock radio. Don't know if it works - don't care, but I might check it out, anyway. Had to make push buttons, but it sure fills the hole nicely. I can get stock buttons from MAC's, but even those are somewhat salty - $30 for 5 of them. I turned some out of nylon on the lathe, looks pretty good.
Not bad, I like them. With a little more work, if you want to do it, you could easily groove the sides.
The radios for the '48-50 trucks are even harder to find than the later models. I bought a rebuilt one 15 years ago for $200, now I see junk ones go for that much. I have a couple that I bought over the years for $5-25. I am sure none of them work but they outwardly look pretty good and have all of the parts. I plan to make them light up but use an IPod some how to provide the music somehow. Maybe rig something up using the one of the pushbuttons to tap the IPod to start it. I'll have a factory radio in each truck.
Roger, how hard do you think it would be to do the same thing with a piece of aluminum? I wouldn't think it would be that hard. The buttons on the '48-50 are chromed but aluminum would look just as good.
Wouldn't be hard at all...the '51/'52 are a cream colored plastic so the white, or natural, is fairly close. Polished aluminum would be great for the chrome ones. Plus, they have new treatments for aluminum, that it would retain it's polish for a long time.
As for the "guts", the box is really big. I would consider putting an entire stereo in, with a remote, that could be operated with the remote. Best of all worlds!
