hey guys my brother has a 2000 ford ranger 2.5L I4. The other day some punk kids slashed the tires keyed the truck and poured something into the fuel tank. i just took the tank out of the truck and i am going to get it cleaned. i only had one problem on my truck the fuel pump is heald in by a a metal flange that you open using a screw driver, but on his it is made of plastic. i was just wondering if there is a special way of taking it off or do i just grunt and turn it. thanks
Its plastic ring and it just unscrews. I am not sure what is the best way to clean that tank. the metal ones we just had them steam cleaned the plastic tanks don't know it steam would melt them or not.
Look for locking tabs on the retainer ring that might need to be depressed to remove & you might need the special spanner wrench, or fashion one, to remove the retainer ring.
If the plastic tank won't tolerate the heat of steam cleaning, maybe careful use of a pressure washer would do.
To prevent future mischief in the future, maybe have Brother consider a locking gas cap.
I opted for a Motorcraft FC-1005 XU5Z-9030-HC locking gas cap from my local Motorcraft Distributor for $17 & change.
Comes with two keys, I keep one in the glove box & the other one in the center armrest console, for easy access at fill time.
