Hey guys, I was wondering if you could get a 92-96 f150, with a 351 and a 5spd manual in a regular cab shortbed configuration. I've checked around online but haven't found any good information about this combination. I think that would be a nice truck to have. Any info would be apreciated, thanks guys!
Quite a few guys have swapped in a ZF 5 speed into their 5.8 trucks, since its stronger than the M50D 5 speed. I think those are the right names.
What were those two transmissions usually found in? The 250s or 350's with the 351 or are they behind something else. Sound like a good project to do and spring time is coming up, so I may start looking for parts
Yes mostly F-250's with 351's. There's quite a few running around in my area. It'll have to be from behind a 300, 302, or 351; a 460 or diesel tranny won't work.
Hey I just had one more question, how can I tell if a truck has a ZF 5 speed or a M50D 5 speed? I found a nice 92 f150 shortbox with a 302 and a 5 speed but the owner says the tranny was rebuilt at 89K!? So im thinking it has to be the weaker of the two or he didnt know how to drive! Anyways, is there a tag on the transmission or the model # stamped somewhere on the pan, and what is the #'s I should be looking for for both these trannies, thanks guys!
If you crawl underneath you'll see "ribs" on the case. The M5OD's are square horizontal/vertical and the ZF's are diagonal. You'll see what I mean when you look at even one of the two.
Or if you're sure nothing's been swapped, look at the trans code on the door jamb sticker. All M5OD trucks I've seen are a code M. My 97 ZF has a code C. I think there were other code(s) for the ZF transmission too though.
Thanks for the tips! I'm probably going to try and look at this truck sometime later in the week. Hopefully it has zf even though its only a 302, but if its got the mazda, then I guess I could live with it for a little while. Do you know if they threw the zf's on 150s behind the 302? I know I've got a lot of questions haha.
1988 was the only year for a ZF in an F-150, and they're RARE. I've never seen one in person, and don't think I've even heard of anyone on here with one.
Damn, looks like I will be out of luck. A tranny swap may be in order then if I decide to get it. One step at a time though, gotta get a truck first, again, thanks for the info!
