When I turn the truck the rear end vibrates and then goes away when I straighten out. It sort of feels like its hopping. Its worse with speed. Is this what they call axle wrap?
Also, if you dont know what is in the rear of your truck, it could be some sort of aftermarket automatic locker (EX: detroit, lockrite...)
a friend of mine had an 82 toyota pickup that he used for wheelin, and if he drove it on road it would do that exactly. sometimes (hard, fast turns) it would sound like a gunshot...
just my .02
what they all said plus this video, this is axle wrap, you can hear the dash rattle when i take off and even the camera gets shaken in my hands http://youtube.com/watch?v=9Fdu6z4PzKk
Correct neal. Traction bar is a lot different than ladder bar. Traction bar is the technical name for the older style, which I am sure that you remember on 70s muscle cars. It was the 3 inch piece that always stuck out to the front of the rear tires and ended at the front of the spring perch for the rear axle. A aldder bar is the updated version but still the step down from a 4 link. It usually runs forward3 feet or more to control axle wrap, and is a MUCH better idea.
Yeh the traction bars that always filled up with gravel. LOL
Does anybody offer a ladder bar setup for these trucks or is it custom? I saw where one of the Gurus from DRD made a nice one. Would love to have that one.
Alright, I read first page, so second page replies. oh well.
This sounds heavily like clutch pack screwing up.
It makes a horrible vibration sound that shakes the truck if your truck is heavy. Actually sounds like something breaking. The first one is usually the worse, well, because they are all breaking loose.
I dont know about the 10.25 stearling, but the 8.8's have tabs in them, and when they break, all sorts of wierd noises happen and the LS doesn't work well at all.
Friction modifer is the cheepest fix you have. If you havn't recently changed the oil. Do it yourself, and put in the friction modifier. I coudlnt' find fluid with the modifier in it, so i baught one tube for what I put in the 02, and it wasn't enough.
There are other clunks that go on during turnning and sometimes its slop in the springs, but i highly doubt it will do it with the weight.
The only other thing that could be going on, which i doubt cause its a full float, is the axle or the wheels are shifting.
today I took my rear shaft out to be balanced. The guys there said the splines were worn out, the ujoints were toast and the shaft was bent. So now I need a new one. What are my options here? What years will fit my truck?

Thanks,

That sounds like a lot of damage!
if you havent already, ask to see the parts, he's legally required to show/give you them.
that way you know he's not messin w/ you.
as for the parts, i have no clue.
good luck though!
I picked up the drive shaft and he wasnt messing with me. That thing is in tough shape. The spline on the rear was totally seized up. He couldnt even separate the two halves. Im still searching for options.
What do you mean "searching for options"? Do you mean searching for a new shaft? Or searching for someone to build you a new one. I would be willing to bet that being in MA with all the snow plow trucks, there has got to be a drivetrain shop somewhere close.
I say the LS in the rear end is "chirping". That's what happens when you change the diff fluid and don't add the friction modifer. Have you had the diff serviced recently? If you have, try adding friction modifer and see if it goes away. And FYI, if you do add the modifer DON'T GET ANY ON YOU!!!! You think gear oil smells bad..........wow. And it will stay on you for 2 or 3 days, no matter how much carb cleaner you use and hand cleaner, showers.......it stays. If you haven't had the diff serviced, I would take this opportunity to pull the cover and give it a look. And No, that is not axle wrap.
i used to think gear oil smelt bad...a couple hundred gallons of it ago. i remember changing the tranny oil on my first car in high school, getting it all over my shirt and getting yelled at by my mom for putting it in the laundry
Being that i've been in this drive shaft epidemic. I'll share info.
Okay, you need to find a driveshaft as long as yours or longer.
Take it to somebody who has a ballance. Nobody else!
They can use yoru spline and your companion shaft on the rear end will be reusable.
Just have them cut to lenght and put a new yoke on and then with everything on it except the companion flange (you dont want to unbolt it cause of the drag setting) have them ballance it.
That is the best way. and cheepest.
A new shaft is usaully 700+
I have a 91 drive shaft on my 95 truck.
Getting one from a scrap yard is pratically impossible with the way they lable them. I went to 6 and coudln't even find one taht i could identify as a ford, let alone one with the correct spline, cause I needed the right spline as well as the rest.
I got lucky to have a good shop to take mine too that had all spicer parts for me to use.
