I swapped a bad 5.0 for a good running 5.8 in my 1991 F150. I left the original computer in and the engine runs fine. I kept the original AOD tranny. After the swap, the tranny shifted poorly and eventually burned up. I bought a used AOD that the owner wasn't 100% sure about and put that in. This tranny goes into Reverse and Drive nicely, however, It shifts hard (and at a higher RPM) into 2nd, and will not shift into 3rd or OD. I am assuming that the new tranny has a problem and that the engine swap should have nothing to do with the tranny problem. I have been told that the AOD should work fine with the 5.8, it's just "lighter duty". Anyone have any suggestions?

Another unhappy 351 AOD marriage. TV cables, certain other issues abound with the AOD. See the links here for AOD merchants. Lots of propaganda on their sites about what they do and why, parts, kits and whole transmissions.
The 351 was in a '91 e150 van (same year as my F150) and had an E40D transmission. Ken
Yeah.. that's not good. As stated you need the correct flexplate, the one you have is probably pushing the TC back too far which binds the pump and causes your problems.
The TV cable alters the line pressure inside the tranny in sync with the throttle position. It has to be set correctly to provide sufficient initial line pressure(throttle closed) and the correct shift points.
I did the 5.0 to 5.8 AOD swap myself.. Dealer sold me the AOD and said it would work. They never told me about the flex plate issue. The Ford Dealer in Conshohocken told me it was my fault for installing it..... yeah what ever $1500 wasted, no help from them OR Ford.... The flex plate froma a 5.8 Crown Vic police car 90 91 is what is needed . I researched this myself due to the dealer not knowing what they are selling. If you need more info i may hav eit around still or be able to find it. It should work with all the right parts. I opted to go with the c6 swap.....had one given to me rebuilt it works great some minor mods had to be done . If u have questions email me and we can phone if u need. Good Luck
So aardvark392 (and others), I assume that putting the 302 flexplate (original one) on the 351 is not an option? Is the Police Car version of the flex plate the only one to use? What about a 90-91 regular Crown Vic with a 5.8? I am also assuming that you guys are telling me that the incorrect flex plate will cause the tranny not to shift correctly. Right? BTW, I adjusted the TV cable and it didn't help the situation. I was leaning towards a gunked up valve body, due to the tranny sitting for awhile.
More thoughts, please. Keep 'em comming!

Doesn't matter what version it is as long as it's for a 5.8/AOD combo.

Yes. I had the same problem when I did my swap and the correct flexplate fixed it. The differences between the plates are very subtle, you need them side by side to see it.
Anyone have any advice on how to find a suitable flex plate? The salvage yard I use take most of the transmissions out of the cars. A 5.8 is easy enough to identify, but what about the transmission? Especially if there is'nt one?
