1993 F150

I havent posted here in a while and now im asking a question for my buddy who has my old truck. the truck has been well taken care of with well over 400,000 miles. its a 93 F150 with straight 6 and he is having some issues with the motor reving real high. at first it did it only once in a while but now its all the time. the other day he started it so it could warm up and he came out a couple minutes later and it was screeming! any ideas what might be causing this? thanks in advance.

Sounds to me like a throttle position sensor problem.

I dont really see how the TPS could cause that. The way I understand it is all the TPS does is send back information to the computer to tell it how far open the throttle body. I dont really think it can affect idle. One way to check it is with a volt meter though.

I guess if it works go for it. Not a very expensive part to replace anyways. Just usually a TPS will give a dead spot in acceleration or a hesitation but I could see how it could do that just ive never heard of it.

The TPS is mounted using phillips head screws. Use a stubby screw driver that fits good or there will be a chance you will scre up the head on it.

Check to make sure the throttle and linkage is totally returning to idle position.

does the tps for that truck need to be adjusted? does the computer need to be reset? he changed the tps out and its still doing the same thing. could a vacuum line have something to do with this problem?

I have read some post on people drilling their bolt/screw holes on their TPS's so they can adjust them. Not sure how common this is.

A vacuum leak would definatly cause this kind of problem.

You might want to test the IAC to see if it might be your problem. Unplug it and see if the idle drops. If it does not drop a lot or even stall out it is a good sign it is bad.

If you unplug the IAC and it doesn't die, it isn't necessarily a bad IAC. Vacuum leaks will cause a high idle and can allow enough air in to keep it running (sometimes just as fast) without the IAC. The best way I use to find them is unplug the IAC if it'll stay running and spray suspect areas with carb cleaner. The engine will die or sputter when you hit a leak.
