i have both a 429 and a 460
the 429 is a stock 2v, and the 460 have an edelbrook manifold and 4v carb, i wanted to know what be the best engine for a 79 bronco with a C6 trannie, this bronco will be used for playing on the weekend. p.s. dont alot of money into them yet
460 for Torque/climbing Longer stroke 3.85 inches ... 429 for Speed/ mud shorter stroke 3.59 means higher revs. = speed
I would recommend Comp Cams Extreme 4x4 Cams.. I had one put in my 460.. engine goes in my 84 Fullsize bronco Monday... can't wait to fire it up!
Uzi... Yamaha Sleds, Honda Bikes, and Ford Trucks....
JKT...... Just depnds on what you want to do once the engine is in the Bronc..... Both will develop great torque but the 460 will develop more....The 429 will be a little more rev happy..... I have one in my '74 3/4 ton 4x4 and am fairly happy w/ it.... Will turn the tires into white smoke and melted rubber but I have driven similar trucks to mine w/ 460's that would out pull it and they had stock engines..... Mine has a few mods; Cam,intake,carb...thats about all... Either way you go ...In something like a bronco it will be FUN.......... Paul
What I would do is go with the 460 if it were me. I follow the age old saying, "No Replacement for Displacement." You aren't going to rev a 460 to the brinks that you would a 429, but think about it......Do you REALLY want to rev a big block up that high anyway? That's how I made my desicion as to what motor to put in my car (I realize this is a truck site, but this site rules and I have to come here even though I don't own a truck yet). As far as Hi-perf. parts, I would go with an Edelbrock Peformer Intake and a cam that matches the Edelbrock Performer Cam just not an Edelbrock Cam. I have heard that Edelbrock cams wear out faster and don't give as much performance power as they should. I personally like Comp. Cams, but have heard good things about Blue Racer's & Wolverine's. Good luck with whatever you do man.

As far as concern about revs, I'd have to agree with Tbirdguy. Both of these engines have done their best work by about 4000 RPM. Reving any further wouldn't yield much. The extra stroke of the 460 will come in quite handy for truck use.
Locate a 71' Mark III Continental which was 365hp (and the deck height was not changed until the 72 came out). Choose the cam of your choice and rebuild the heads for sure and all the clean up work it needs in the bottom end then top it with a 750 Holley, headers and you will be happy!

351m year for year the 429, and 460 had the same heads with the exceptions of the scj (DooE-R casting number), and the boss 9 both of which are a different animal all together, and since the 429 is a 2v it's just a passenger car engine not one of the high perf engines.(BTW all the 460s had 4v carbs unless someone changed intakes trying for fuel economy or something) The early castings will have a smaller combustion chamber, and thus will give a little more compression but for the most part stay away from the 72 castings as were open chamber and really prone to detonation so not a good choice.
Now there are some good recommendation here such as the comp cams xtreme 4x4 cams I have used them in a couple of engines, and they are a really good grind for a truck, but I wouldn't bother with the performer intake, go with a performer RPM you will be much happier for not much of an increase in cost. The performer won't make much more of a difference than the stock 4v intake.
