I have a 1996 ford explorer xlt, it has a factory AM/FM cassette player with CD changer (PREMIUM SYSTEM) I want to put a 1997 factory AM/FM CD player. I installed it & hooked every by the wiring diagram. I left everything hooked up and spliced into the speakers, it powers on and off like it should the clock keeps time & the memory is holding, but the sound is very distorted & the power antenna does not work. with the 1996 factory stereo everything works great & sounds great its just no cd player. The CD changer broke & to fix or replace is very expensive. I really want to get help to have the 1997 CD player working right, I know some of you would tell me to trash it, I prefer to have the factory one in. SO PLEASE HELP THANK U Zac
The factory system probaly has a amplifier on it. The aftermarket stereo is pushing to much power to go through the factory amp and will cause the distortion you talk about. I have a 97 Limited and the pereviuos owner put an aftermarket stereo in it. You have to run new wires from the stereo directly to the door speakers. If i was you i would see if you could find a good used cd changer. The stock systems sound nice but do not work well with aftermarket head units. You may want to try hooking rca ends to the factory speaker wires and plug them into the rca output on your new deck(if equiped) and try that.
sorry about the confusion, but the (cd stereo in dash) I'm trying to install is a ford factory, it came out of a 1997 ford explorer and I'm wanting to install it in my 1996 explorer?. I went by the wiring diagram of how to hook the adapters which the one was the same, the other has (16 pins) which (8 of the pins) are speaker wires and the the power antenna, I don't have hooked up yet. Don't know how? So thanks for your response Hopefully you can help me out again Thanks
Hmmm i see what you are saying now. Your old head unit (the one that works) has a tape player and also controls the cd changer? Now you want to istall a factoryindash cd player. The plug that is the same is your power supply and thats why the unit turns on and fuctions properly. The other plug has 16 pins 8 for speakers and 8 for the cd changer. I would double check your wiring. I am wondering if ford made a indash cd player that also controled a cd changer. That way it would just plug into the same harness as you have. Were did you get your wiring diagram from? I'll se if i can help in any way. Lancer
Also if you did not solder your connections, you will get sound distortion. You have to use either soldered connection or special plug and spade connectors made for sound systems.
Thanks for your suggestion, what are the plug & spade connecters? I did solder at first & still I got the distortion.I even took the speaker out of the door to see if the other wiring was wrong. I ran new wires to the speaker & it still the same problem??. I have a (ford electrical wiring manual) The stereo that came out of my 1996 explorer worked fine & sounded good I just wanted a factory in/dash AM/FM cd player. The one I am having problems with came out of a 1997 explorer. The seller said it should work in my 1996 explorer. Also the power antenna does not work now.
