what is the easiest way to put in an e4od without a transmission jack? and when i flush my torque converter how much fluid do i put back in it? and haw much does the trans hold?
you can use a jack, a couple strong friends to lay under it and move it around, patience, and beer. does the torque converter use fluid from the tranny? I have never messed around with an automatic tranny.
It's been 20 years since I have bench pressed a transmission but I just had to chime in.
I have done many auto's and transmissions with transfer cases and I prefer the auto's. Never used a jack.
Align the trans. with the truck but off to your good side (mine was the driver's). Lay with your head up at the flywheel and roll to the trans. Hug it like you love it and roll it up on you like a big woman.
The nice thing about the auto is the long tailshaft. Use your knees and legs to support the tail as you press the body up and in. If you can press 120 pounds, you can do it.
Once the pilot is in, you can use the rear shaft to align the spline (did I mention that you need to make sure it is in gear before attempting this?). I found out the hard way.
Once the splines are aligned, a good thrust with the knees and legs sends it home. Then get at least two bolts in before taking a break.
uh, without a transmission jack. ouch, and really no good way to balance a transmission on a floor jack. some torque converters have a drain plug. is there not a rental place for a low profile transmission jack? it would save your back and any other injuries that may occur.....
I agree with animalistic, been installing them for 20 yrs..never saw the need for a jack, just something else in the way.....secret is to have the truck at just the height you need so you can stay flat

hey animal and sydney, yall need to take a gander
at an E4od before you make that statement again
it is in the area of 350#
they did not put these in cars because of there size
these things are HUGE
and to add to old paint, drop this one and you can destroy $3000.00 trans
thats about the same as the transmission/tranfer case in my scout (all cast iron cases and gear-drven) ya..it's a 6itch.....so if your 95lbs wet and never seen a days work don't attempt
I helped a buddy of mine drop a E4od out of his f-250, we just used a floor jack and guided it down. That was probably the biggest tranny I've done, and it wasn't too bad to tell you the truth. It was a bout the same going back in too. If you want a makeshift tranny jack, pull out the cup on your floor jack and find a socket (or peice of tubing)that fits inside the hole. Weld the socket to a peice of plate that fits your tranny pan, drill a few holes in the outside edges of the plate. When you set your tranny on the jack strap it down to the holes in the plate.
