People this is as nice as I could get this. I made my way out to help a friend friday morning, to help him with his chebby. We got it going and he had'nt seen my 79 with the 5" stacks since before it was done. So I drove em'. Well I went over to fire it up and my truck squeeld like a stuck pig. Got em' home friday. And picked my 01 F150 up from the body shop after hitting a patch of ice three weeks earlier. They did one hella job by the way. Drove the 01 to work last saturday. Got em' in the garage this afternoon after church and put the tool box back in and arrainged things after getting em'back. Just came in from outside to see what the hell was squealling on the 79. Lightly sprayeed the power steering and water pump belt. Nadda. Then sprayed the belt for Alternator. It quit squealling. Had my son (Tim) shut em' off. Grabbed the alternator belt. Was loose as a goose.... Then the alternator fell.............. Damned bolt was broke off in the right head!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!! SOB.................. We have our get togather in a few weeks, and if I can't "Easy Out" this bolt............... I have to yank the damned head!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
DUDE! That so sucks!! And I know how you feel. We had a group of Yamaha WaveRunners that had a problem with one of the exhaust bolts breaking right at the exhaust joint. Everytime it happened, the exhaust leak would end up killing the engine so it had to be fixed to stay in service. Oh, I rent them at the Lake during the summer. We had 6 of them that had this issue. You'd have to pull the whole engine to fix the stupid thing and they'd break in a matter of 10-15 hours of riding time. We complained to yamaha who told us they're sorry and that our dealer would continue to fix them under warranty until they came up with a resolution. Our dealer is 3 hours away, so getting it warrantied there was NOT gonna happen. Too much driving. I finally resolved the issue myself. I found a guy that could weld aluminum and I feel SO sorry for the people that ended up buying those units from us. Getting the head serviced is gonna suck! ROFLMAO You gotta take off that one exhaust bolt to get the head off. Hahahahahahahahaa
Ouch. Sorry to hear that, Bob. Try an easy out. If nothing else, drill a small hole in the bolt, and beat a screwdriver into it. (not that I, personally, have ever done such a thing... )
I still don't have my taillights fixed...some warmer weather would help with that one.
Do you have access to a MIG welder? Works good to position a nut over the end of the bolt, weld in the center and then unscrew. I ALWAYS try this before an easy-out. Less chance of damaging threads....
The bolt is broke back inside the head, and not a straight/flat break. Goodie Goodie............. I'm off the next four day's, and supposed to hit 50 degrees tomorrow, so I'm gonna try to get it out. really don't want to pull a head off.
There's another bolt hole in the head I can use, but I'd have to do something creative to get the bottom bracket mounted, to adjust the belt tension.
Wish me luck. I'm gonna need it.
Bob
hey can you center punch it and use reverse drill bits??? it has worked for me many times-easy outs suck you break them and your screwed-left handed drill bits are available through most good auto tool trucks and mechanic shops
Got them here. I brought some home from work last night. Just bearly remembered I had some in my tool box. Haven't even used them before. I've broken easy out's before. And yes............. you're srewed if you bust one. Did it on a headbolt.
I broke a easyout off when trying to get a broke exhaust manifold bolt out, and a drill bit off in another. But with ALOT of patience got them out. Dremmel tool ect...
Drilled three smaller holes around the broke bit and used helicoils to fix it, worked pretty good.
Not really just needed to get it fixed and wanted to but it back together the right way. Ended up breaking off 3 bolts but drilled and tapped the last one ok. Those helicoils are awesome. Came in a complete kit, drill bit, bunch of coils and installation tool. Made the rest of the job a piece of cake.
Got the bolt out. Finally got to use the left handed drill bits I've for a couple years. First didn't do anygood, then went to a larger bit, and it grabbed, spun the blot right out.
Also found another (oddly enough) alternator bolt that was loose. Bottom bracket going to the waterpump. Think what happen is the top bolt was tooooooo short. Just a hair over a 1/4" was in the head. There's alot longer bolt there now. Now if I can get the short fixed so it quits killing battery's in 3 day's, and oh year fix the fuel gauge that hasn't worked since I've had the truck, I'd be even happier. Thanks fellers. Bob
I broke an ARP grade 8 head bolt off in my mustang one day.....that sucked!!!! Buddy of mine was torquing the head down and he thought that the torque setting was supposed to be higher than it actually was so it finally popped and I bout dropped a deuce in my shorts when I heard it give. I was able to drill it and easy-out it though. But now I have all ARP bolts except 1 in my heads.
