Has anybody found original Ford alternator brackets to use on a 429/460 in an F-250 4x4 ('77)?
I know I can get aftermarket brackets, or I can make my own, but I was wondering if Ford made such a bracket. A bracket that mounts up high enough on the head/engine to miss the frame crossmember. I had somebody tell me once that van engines had such a bracket. Maybe, but I got my engine out of a '78 van, and it has a low mounting bracket.
Thanks
Is your 4x4 a 1/2 ton or a 3/4 ton? The frames are different. Brackets that work on the 1/2 ton doesn't necessarily mean they will work on a 3/4 ton.
I spoke to a friend of mine yesterday that swears 460 van brackets will work and clear everything when swapping to an F-250 4x4. The alternator bracket from the van is a cast unit, not stamped steel. He said he has done this swap already and that is the bracket I needed. I haven't put my 460 in yet, but will soon, and then I'll know for sure.
My truck is a 3/4 ton. The bracket I have is stamped steel and mounts the alternator up high and away from everything. I looked for a number on it but didn't see one. Is your truck an early or late 77? On the highboy trucks you can mount down low by drilling another hole in the piece that the alternator slides on for adjustment to shorten it up so it will clear the crossmember.
I have an early '77. Perhaps your steel brackets came from a pre'78 van with a 460? Or, maybe they came off of an 80's 460 4x4 truck? Do you know when the 460 was first offered in a 4x4 and was it a serpentine belt or v-belt?
Also, when you talk about a high mounting alternator, does that mean you are talking about the hole location at the top of the head, and not the bottom?
The long alternator bolt goes in the lower outside hole in the head. The adjuster bracket bolts to the top of the waterpump. The other bracket bolts to the front of the waterpump with one hole and the engine block with the other hole.I also own a early 77 with a 429 in it and have the alternator mounted down low using the mounts off the 69 t-bird the motor came out of.With very minor modifications that I wrote about before.
Thanks,
I also have a steel bracket from a 429 T-bird that I can modify if necessary. There are so many people swapping 460's into these trucks, I was just wondering what brackets they are using and if they are modifying, making, or buying L&L brackets.
I have a friend that went with all L&L brackets and the engine looks great. He has spent a considerable amount on the engine inside and out. He is putting the engine in his '76 crewcab today. Can't wait to go for a ride in that truck.
