I have just done an engine swap. I installed a 1975 460 engine in my 1978 Ford F250 4x4. Everything has bolted up fine except for the brackets and pulleys. I can not get the alternator and brackets to fit right without hitting the front cross member. Is there something I am doing wrong? Or do I need some kind of a conversion bracket?
Thanks!!
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 05-Nov-02 AT 09:20 PM (EST)]I don't have any experience with the big blocks but I will ask some of the obvious questions to start. What engine was in the truck before you swapped in the 460? Did you use the same motor mounts and frame brackets that were in the truck? Are the alternator and brackets you're using now the same ones that were on the 460?
Pardon the upper case .
It's how the article was written.
460 SWAP
1977-79 F100/150 4 WD WITH A 351M/400 ENGINE AND C-6 TRANSMISSION.
IS THE TRANSMISSION GOING TO BOLT UP TO THE BIGGER ENGINE ? YES
WILL I HAVE TO CHANGE THE EXHAUST ? YES
WILL I HAVE TO GET DIFFERENT MOTOR MOUNTS FOR THE 460? YES
WILL I HAVE TO CHANGE THE MOTOR MOUNT TOWERS? NO
WILL THE POWER STEERING BRACKETS FROM THE 351M WORK ON THE 460 ? NO
WILL THE ALTERNATOR BRACKETS FROM THE 351M WORK ON THE 460 ? NO
DID FORD EVER OFFER A 4 WD TRUCK WITH A 460 ENGINE ? NO ONLY IN THE 2 WD MODELS
WILL THE FLYWHEEL FROM THE 351M/400 INTERCHANGE FROM EITHER AUTO TRANS. OR MANUAL TRANS? NO THERE IS A DIFFERENCE IN THE WAY THE 460 FLYWHEEL ARE BALANCED. EXAMPLE SOME OF THE 429/460 IN THE EARLY 70'S WERE EXTERNALLY BALANCED WHICH REQUIRED A WEIGHTED DAMPNER SPACER. WHEN YOU BUILD YOUR ENGINE MAKE SURE YOU KNOW HOW IT IS BALANCED BECAUSE IF YOU PUT THE WRONG SPACER OR FLYWHEEL YOU WILL GET ONE HELL OF A VIBRATION WHEN YOU START THE ENGINE, AND PRETTY QUICK YOU WILL POUND THE MAIN BEARS RIGHT OUT.
